If Burrow does not break his hand he most likely would have been the Ohio State starter last year.
I forgot about this injury. It must have played a huge part in the decision to make Joe the back up.
It was difficult to read Urban's motives. He seemed sincere and I gotta give Urban the benefit of the doubt -- he was relating his recollections of what his opinions were back at the time. As we know, however, people have a natural tendency to recollect past events in a light most favorable to themselves.
I think we should appreciate Urban Meyer's sincerity and honesty. Everybody knows that he picked the wrong starter, and, that's a gut-punch to his reputation as a Guru. This one stings, for Urban.
It was really fun to hear him share his insights WRT how a famous college HC evals and develops his QBs.

AND, they are saying Burrow will not do well at Cincy... an even DUMBER take than before. IMO!
there is a reason it always seems to be the same handful of teams drafting early every year.
and those same teams continue to suck despite taking the best QBs every year.
hint: it ain’t always the QBs fault his career is short and shitty.
these teams typically have next to nothing of value around the QB.
and i don’t care how good you are, without the right pieces (or any pieces at all in some instances) around you, you won’t do well.

Thank you, CUM, for your seed!

Why does this offend some people? There were reasons Meyer didn’t start Joe. He’s just giving his reasons. Why would he lie?? Do y’all think he sat Joe because he didn’t like him? He thought Haskins had more potential. Plain and simple. Haskins is starting in the NFL so it ain’t like he started garbage over Joe.
There were no insults from Meyer and he also gave the LSU coaching staff credit for developing him to his current status.

quote:He should have used that drill with Barrett.
Urban demonstrated a drill in which the coach kneels by a stack of many footballs, softly under-hand tosses them to the QB and the drill is that the QB throws each football as quickly as he can get it out of his hands.
I'm not a Meyer-hater, but his best years (on offense) were with the Zone Read Option. He may figure out the Spread/RPO (or hire out the task), but I don't see him as much of an authority on passing QB's in this system. Day dealt with Haskins.
He whiffed on Burrow - didn't even watch him throw during his recruiting years (Meyer had said he needed to see him throw before signing him). According to Joe's dad, he only signed Joe when he learned from Tom Herman that Saban was making the trip to Athens within a week - and Meyer still hadn't watched him throw when he signed Joe (from the Tuesday Jimmy interviews with T-Bob)

Urban has been pretty damn great on TV. I actually really enjoy his commentary and analysis.

Joe didn't lack accuracy. Joe never had trust with his coaches/coordinators until now. The change this year was, they let Joe be Joe. They built their plan around his abilities and talents. They saw the same thing in him as they saw in Brees. Joe is fearless and Joe knows how to attack the defense, particularly in the middle of the field. It's hard to defend him for the same reason it's hard to defend Drew Brees. They can and will hit you anywhere on the field.

I saw the preview special on FS1 with Urban. They went into intricate detail on some of the staples of our offense.
I dislike him personally, but he absolutely knows how to identify a QB out of high school that he can develop.
I'm sure it bothers him that Burrow outshined Haskins when his time came, but CUM can recruit QBs for my school any time.

Meyer let 2 (two) Heisman winners get away. It is a myth that Newton was suspended - he wasn't. Newton left because he was promised he'd start in 2009.
Meyer is one of the all-time great recruiters. No doubt. But Meyer spent his available time coaching Special Teams, not QBs. That task he delegated.

Meyer never had a ton of confidence in Joe Burrow’s talent level. He says over and over how Joe’s best attribute was his determination, grit, blah blah. In other words, he didn’t think Joe had the physical tools to do what he’s doing this year.
I’m sure he’s happy for Joe but he also doubted a guy who just put together one of the best seasons in college football history that he had riding the bench. That has to be a blow to his ego.

I personally believe that his accuracy isn't better than Tua.
Joe Burrow isn't nearly as accurate as Tua. What Burrow has over Tua is his ability to go through progressions super fast, then deliver a strike as the pocket is collapsing. How many times have we seen Burrow about to be swamped, then the next thing we see is the team lining up, 1st and ten, 30 yards downfield?
Burrow is very accurate, but Tua is at another level. But there's a lot more to playing QB than just accuracy. Both are great QB's, but Burrow is overall better.

Burrow is FAR more accurate than Tua.
Over 15 yards:
Burrow - 61.54%
Tua - 50.91%
Line of Scrimmage to 15 yards
Burrow - 82.69%
Tua - 71.09%
Behind Line of Scrimmage:
Burrow - 94.23%
Tua - 93.85%

Meyer did not even want Burrow. It was Tom Herman who made them take him.

YES. It was the FS1 CFB Playoff preview show. I hope that they show a repeat.
Matt Leinart was on the show throwing the footballs in the drill that Urban was tossing. Leinart works for Fox Sports and FS1 is a Fox sports show.

Absolutely. When you tell the world that you are the smartest football guru and coach around and you miss on a Joe Burrow type of Heisman winner? It's a gut punch to the ego, certainly.

Burrow was one of the most accurate QB's in the history of Ohio HS football. 72.3% as a Senior, and 71.2% as a Junior. And as a Senior, Joe threw 63 TDs with 2 INTs.
Bottom line: Meyer wants the QB to laser-blast every throw. Burrow is a "Touch" QB (unless heat is absolutely necessary)

Your thoughts have been proven wrong with statistics of passes over 10 yds. Burrow is in a whole different class than any QB in the country and it’s not even close. He’s head and shoulders above Tua.
