I guess we should be a little worried that our coach doesn't realize that he can control his job status by getting his team to win games.

Doesn't really seemed concerned about things he can control either.

Here’s what bothers me. This team is playing like a bottom 5 team when it’s got a middle of the road roster. Yeah Gentry sucks, but the overall staff is very highly regarded. It shouldn’t be this bad.

Is the problem that Zion is the missing ingredient, or does this team need to play a different way? That’s what we need to find out. Firing Gentry now or later doesn’t matter. The answers we need won’t come until Zion starts playing.

Article out from Will at The Athletic discussing Gentry's job status:

LINK

quote:

“I’ve been in the league 31 years, I don’t ever worry about anything that I don’t have any control over,” he said. “I don’t have any control over that. You would have to ask that question to the people that have control. I just know I’m going to come in to work every day and do everything I can to get this turned around.”

That’s basically been the response Gentry has given year in and year out whenever his status come into question, but things are different with this squad.

Sure, the roster he’s coaching is one of the youngest in the league and injuries have prevented him from putting the same group of players on the court for any extended period of time. We also have yet to see one minute of rookie phenom Zion Williamson in a Pelicans uniform during the regular season.

But that things have spiraled out of control before the halfway mark of the season has to be alarming for everyone within the franchise.

If I were in his shoes, I wouldn’t be worried either. Gentry will always have a position as an assistant in the league. There is value in the right position with a guy like Alvin. He’s going to be on a coaching staff until he retires. There are things that he is really good at. Unfortunately head coaching isn’t one of them.

If you are planning to consider Finch for the job, the timing does matter. Nobody is bringing this team to the playoffs after that start, but the season still has value.

We really don’t know how good this roster is until it’s healthy and the kids have more experience.

There's only one player missing at this point (I'm not counting Miller) and they are still losing.

You shouldn't lose 12 straight simply from missing a rookie.

How much experience? A year? two? 3?

Experience? at least the remainder of this season.

Why do they need to be coached by Alvin Gentry to get that experience?

Won't they get it regardless?

No professional basketball coach should be able to survive a 12 game losing streak. Uncle Al last won a game before Thanksgiving and we are a week from Christmas.

The 76ers coach survived the longest losing streak in history at 28 games because everyone knew what the deal was: they were doing the most blatant tank in NBA history and they absolutely did not want to win.

This case is obviously different.

So if we all agree that coaching is underperforming and that STILL doesn't explain the gap between the results, then what is the natural conclusion?

To me it clearly circles back to the roster.

There's a dearth of talent, defense, and heart. People had inflated expectations of the talent on this roster and they are struggling to reconcile that now even though it shines bright every game.

That's where I am. You can't blame Gentry for the fact that this roster only has one guard who is starting quality. If you look at advanced stats, Lonzo Ball has literally performed at the level of a replacement player, meaning that we should be able to find someone in the G-League to play as well.

You also can't blame Gentry for the fact that Nicolo Melli isn't an NBA player. You also can't blame Gentry for all our defensive woes when we are now starting a player in J.J. Redick who is one of the worst defenders in the league -- literally, out of 219 qualifying players, Redick ranks at #217 in defensive box +/-.

David Griffin has to share in the blame.

dearth of talent

I tend to agree that the roster is an issue. There is talent, but it's mostly young, it's sort of ill fitting, and there's no anchor (either from a player or the coaching staff) to give it coherence.

One of the preseason talking points was that it was going to take time to figure out how to maximize the roster.

Clearly Gentry hasn't been able to do so. Clearly having to play a frontcourt of Okafor and Hayes (promising but still a 19 yo rookie who makes mistakes) has been a disaster. Clearly Ball/Holiday have not figured it out.

Yet there isn't reason to panic or despair for the long term. Things haven't gone as anyone would have liked, but the team can still learn from all of these issues.

The roster is young and promising. They have flexibility. Griffin gives them a better rep around the league. Hopefully, Zion comes back soon, is healthy, and they can see how he and Ingram fit so they have an idea of where to go over the next few years.
