Why is the term "served" used to describe government employees?

For instance, members of the HoR and Senate.
They make a lot more money than we do plus get all kinds of goodies like inside tips and when they leave said "job" they are millionaires. They then slide into a lobbying "job" and make more boatloads of money for doing nothing.
Someone who is in the military "serves".

I was thinking of this the other day. It used to be that way that federal politicians gave up lucrative jobs to be public servants. John Adams and George Washington for instance. Now it seems the public service is the lucrative job.

Now all they serve is their own interests.

It's the same as calling a football player at a college a "student athlete". It's to give the facade that it's "selfless service" when it's more like "self-serving".

Because they serve us all up, like a stuffed turkey.

Meh that comparison is weak. At least football players work hard to earn the scholarship to get where they are. The ball and stats don’t lie.
People in Washington lie cheat and steal to get where they are then act like they are making some great sacrifice in their service. If that were the case the cost of living and the prices in DC wouldn’t be the highest in the US.

Ever read a politician's autobiography? 'When I was still a young student I felt a call to public service because there are things bigger than myself.'

Because most of them should be.
