im seeking ideas for a home made push pole for flatboat for marsh fishing in the shallows
i figure a 10ft length of 1" or 1 1/4" pvc should be fine for the pole itself but what sort of end to push off with is where im not sure about
i prefer to make something myself rather then just buy one, so has anyone out there ever made their own push pole and has any ideas?

I'd just pony up and buy one, it sucks, but there are no good ways to make a decent one.

Maybe you could find a cheap used pole vaulting pole or something? Some aluminum conduit? No cheap way to do it if you're going out and buying stuff.

I used to buy an 1 1/2 or 1 1/4 fir pole from Morrison’s in Houma. You can put the commercial duck bill or a wood foot(my preference). Sand the pole real smooth so it slides easily.

Superstick looks like an interesting option as it telescopes and becomes more compact.

General rule for pushpoles is that longer and lighter is generally better.
Keep an eye on craigslist or FB as used push poles do pop up from time to time

those swimming pool net handles are super light and extend over 10'. Put a push pole foot on it and you're gtg.

i figured how hard could it be to grab a pole and put a flat end on it
im thinking its only going to need to be like 10ft or so since im siting on the front deck seaty using it and not up on a platform.
i hadnt thought of some of the issues you guys raised so i'll probably give it a try with a treated 2x2 instead of pvc. it wont last as long but it wont bend as easy

I found an old pool net telescoping pole on the side of the road. A duck foot was around 10 bucks. It isn't good for heavy dude poling but it works for light stuff.

How about you go in the woods and cut a long branch that has a Y at the end of it.
We have two at our camp that we found in the swamp. We shaved the bark off and been using them for years.

I bought an aluminum push pole from a boat builder in Covington. It is 10ft, powder coated with a fixed foot for $95. Used it last weekend and it is very solid.
