Maybe I'm overreacting a little, but that's DQ worthy, IMO.

So, on the replay they said he is allowed to ground his club there but not improve his lie. Clearly he improved his lie, my question is why is he allowed to ground his club? It looks like a bunker to me

It's a waste area. He's allowed to ground his club and I think remove any loose impediments.

Gotcha, I need to talk to my local course about making some of the bunkers waste areas

He grazed the sand twice with practice backswings in the waste bunker.

Not exactly blatant cheating since they told him it was a 2 stroke penalty and he agreed.

Look at the other video in the OP. He's done this before today. He knew what he was doing. This waste bunker topic has come up before though, and Kuchar was allowed to improve his lie; so maybe Reed shouldn't be penalized at all.

The tour hates waste areas for this very reason. There’s a video of Jim Furyk at Harbor Town removing loose impediments (legally) and it ends up looking like his ball is teed up when he’s done.

You can ground your club in bunkers now and he brushed some sand. You can also move loose impediments in bunkers this year. I have no problem with what he did.

Not entirely true...

quote:

New Rule: Under Rules 12.2a and 12.2b, the player is allowed to touch or move loose impediments in a bunker and is generally allowed to touch the sand with a hand or club; but a limited prohibition continues so that the player must not:

Deliberately touch the sand in a bunker with a hand, club, rake or other object to test the condition of the sand to learn information for the stroke, or
Touch the sand in a bunker with a club in making a practice swing, in grounding the club right in front of or behind the ball, or in making the backswing for a stroke.

LINK

None of this really applies to this situation because this was a waste area, not a bunker.

That dude CLEARLY removed sand from behind his ball, not once but twice, with the intention of improving his lie.

That's blatant. He knew exactly what he was doing.

And Fatrick said he didn't see any sand move? Lmao...dude moved 1/3 cup of sand each time and didn't see it?

This was pretty blatant and seemingly intentional. This type of shite should have punitive repercussions. I mean there no explanation for what he did.

Meh. He said the camera looked worse than what it was. He didn’t think it improved his lie which wouldn’t be a penalty. He accepted it. No player will talk about it.

It wasn't. It's defined as a waste area. Thus he was able to ground his club. That's also why you saw his caddie in the waste area with him.
