Are stolen pistols ever recovered?

Had a 2-3” crack in my window of my truck. Go into Walmart.
Come out, Springfield XDm 9 was gone from under drivers side seat.
Immediately called cops and went to the security/cam people at Walmart. Right after they showed the video of him walking up, grabbing it and leaving, the cops showed up.
Cop, myself and LPA talked for a second about what transpired, I filled out the stuff because I had the box in the truck so serial # was readily available.
They saw his direction and close. Doubt any cops were dispatched that way looking for a walking man in known attire.
Cop told me it was a 50/50 chance it gets caught in a drug bust/pullover with the gun.
However if they scratch the serial I never get it back (even thought they can still get the # after scratching).
He acted like they scratch them because the charge is less than an unscratched. Thought scratching was extra time?
Anybody ever actually gotten a stolen gun back?

I've known a few people that have gotten them back but it's luck of the draw and no telling what condition it will be in.

He was able to reach through your window and unlock your truck?

Why would you risk losing a few hundred bucks to keep your truck 5 degrees cooler?

I double check my windows and locks twice when I have a pistol in there. Not blaming the OP because frick a thief but minimal precautions would prevent a lot of these.

A friend of mine teaches HS. He had a couple of guns and a bunch of other stuff stolen from his house. A few weeks later one of his former students was seen flashing one of the guns around on instagram.

I grew up where we didn’t even have a key to our house. We never locked it, and the keys were just lost over the years. Never ever locked a car or truck.
That said, as soon as I moved to Baton Rouge and then Shreveport, I made it a habit to lock my car as soon as I stepped out.
I read all the time where people in Shreveport leave cars unlocked and lose pistols, laptops, Tablets, etc. WTF people? How fricking hard is it to click a damned button?

As the other person said screw a thief. I had a friend killed by someone who stole a gun from someone’s car. I wish people were more vigilant about not leaving guns in their trucks with unlocked doors or windows down or cracked... I hear of this far too often.
Every time I hear of someone being careless with their gun I think of my friend and hope that nobody has to go through that. He was shot multiple times in the body and they burned his body in a church parking lot. His parents lost their only son. If I knew my carelessness contributed in the smallest way to something like that, I don’t know what I’d do.

You’ll get it back if they try to pawn it or it’s found during a bust. Otherwise it could be anywhere. Guns are near impossible to track down. They’re only found when stumbled upon.

Yeah, not blaming the OP, but damn, just seems a foolish way to protect your valuables.

I don't think blaming another victim of the criminal is where to go. I get that you want to blame someone for your hurt though.

My uncle got one back that he had reported stolen 25 years earlier. It does happen if the info was put into the proper database. I imagine now they are pretty strict with it. If the gun turns up you will be notified.

Idk how he made it through that window to the lock. But it’s an older truck with the traditional pull up lock. He had 2-3” to slide through but didn’t have to go far.
I know I fricked up. Just wondering if there’s any chance to get it back

One thing that ensures your gun is never returned is not knowing the serial number. Please God have a record of your valuable’s serial numbers or kiss them goodbye.

How can they get the number after it’s scratched

My parents house in Walker was robbed. A few weeks later my dad got a call from NOPD that they pulled a car over and found his 1911. It took me getting the assistant DA involved to get the gun back. The slide was scuffed up pretty bad. I have it now... will prob have it refinished at some point.
