Planning starts a year plus in advance.

Butane or butadiene? That plant handles a lot of butadiene and that would make a much bigger boom than butane

How exactly does an explosion rip a door from its hinges but not break any surrounding glass or even the glass on the door? I’m not doubting what happened, I am a little hesitant to believe that picture is from this event. That seems so incredibly unlikely.

idk dude, I thought the samething and then started looking at facebook and there are alot of videos coming out. Looks like alot of doors were blown off hinges, one houses foundation was cracked. (plant was pretty much in their backyard though.

I live 10 miles away and it rattled my house. Sounded like when a big clap of thunder is right on top of you. It was pretty significant. My oldest son came running in saying the plant blew up call your friends and see if they are ok.. I called out to the unit and they told me it was the plant across the street.. looks like 3 injured no fatalities so far..

Damn, plants pay big $ for blast resistant openings. I cant really fathom the pressure a blast creates, but that helps paint a picture.

I'm guessing one of those cylinders/spheres went up?

From what I saw on the news its their tower section and a few small tanks .. the spheres seem to be ok for now ..

I have family that lives in Port Neches pretty close to the plant. They are staying home anticipating the north wind soon to help out. Scary stuff. Can confirm neighbors doors were blown off. Windows above bed shattered on them too while sleeping.
Do they have it contained?

What’s cool about that is watching the flash, then the pause before the pressure wave reaches. Good demonstration of the speed of light versus the speed of a shock wave versus the speed of sound.

Sounds like we've worked together.

It's contained. The front blew in about 230 this morning switching the wind out of the north about 15 miles per hour.. our plant is supplying them with fire water. We get some of our feedstock from them as well as use some of their spheres for storage. Our plant is down for the duration of this.

I appreciate the heads up. Are you at Total plant?

The time stamp on that tweet is actually 13 hours before the incident.

Don't like seeing our cold box plastered all over the news.

And right after this...
The ATF determined that the West, Texas explosion was the result of arson. None of the regulations implemented by the Obama Administration following the 2013 explosion would have prevented it. The regs were all related to the Risk Management Program covered under the Clean Air Act.
