If our defense continues to give up huge yards / points

We will not be #1, and we will get stuck with the more difficult seeding in the playoffs. Even if we beat UGA.
It’s clear that the talking heads value huge margins of victory against subpar teams over big margins of victory offer subpar teams who still score a lot of points. And I expect the committee to follow suit.
This is why margin of victory matters, and has always mattered. And this is why it’s not ok to give up 600 yds to a team that won’t go bowling.

To be fair, the opposing teams are getting many more chances on offense to score than in the past.

If we win out I don't see any way we won't be #1. That would be 5 top 10 wins (or 4 if you take Texas out) and 2 top 5 wins. No one else even remotely has that resume. If they didn't have us as #1 teams would see there is zero reason to schedule any decent OOC games as winning big is more important than beating quality opponents.
