I believe in the louder pipes theory. Just by experience noise gets more attention, say in a drivers blind spot. Very rarely on the cruiser does someone come in my lane but with my sports bike it's much more frequent. I assume its directly because they can hear my cruiser therefore note mentally there is a motorcycle near and pay a little more attention.
My pipes aren't insanely loud though. I have speakers as well but keep them low while in the city. Only turn the volume up when at higher speeds on back roads.

100% would support a decibel limit on highway vehicles. fricking rednecks take the muffler off a 1995 gmc pickup and think they are badass. Same goes for the harley fgts that destroy the quiet of Great Smokey Mountains.
