Hard Rock Hotel Collapse Followup

Still not seeing much in terms of actual cause.
This Link Says that there is still no known cause.
This Link has several lawsuits alleging the following.
Based on everything I've seen, the design is without a doubt the cause. Were there early reports that a smaller ground crane fell into the building setting off the domino effect? That doesn't seem logical.
I suppose this will be wrapped up in litigation for years to come.
In the meantime, bodies of two people are still in the debris and can't be recovered due to safety concerns. Sucks for that family.

The design could not bear the full load of the hotel structure. The number and type of structural supports holding up concrete slabs on the hotel's upper floors prior to the collapse were inadequate. Pile load tests results submitted to the city were for a different project in a different location and not for the Hard Rock project. In order to meet the schedule, concrete was not allowed to cure for an appropriate amount of time. Unskilled workers were used on the project in order to save money.

And you base this on a lawsuit filing?

The only thing you can guarantee is that there will not be a Hard Rock Hotel at that site

whats going to suck going forward is that this is going to just be an empty lot/eye sore for the next 10+ years while this is going through whatever legal process is in front of them

Have they still not recovered the bodies?

That’s terrible. This whole matter sounds like it should have happened in a third-world country, not the US.

Watching the Hard Rock then comparing it to WTC building 7 makes me wonder a lot.....

No, they have not due to safety concerns. They know where one of the bodies is located, and have a good idea as to the location of the other. They are waiting for an engineered approved safety plan before taking any further steps with regard to activities at the building.

No, seems like design, construction company, and inspectors are all at fault.

You need to learn a lot of things.

Nope and to quote the high and mighty Latoya Cantrell...10 days ago...10 days after the collaspe.
quote:
“Our focus remains on securing the perimeters of the site and moving forward with extraction as well as removing the remains of our victims that are still on the site,” Mayor LaToya Cantrell said. “(the recovery) will be with dignity and it will be with respect.”
not a damn thing has changed...those bodies are so decomposed and eaten up by rodents, there's nothing left to recover

I just don't see them recovering the bodies in the building's current condition. They start moving pieces of concrete could result in more collapse of the building and cost additional lives. Sad to say that they are going to potentially have to demolish the entire building and then try to recover the bodies while cleaning up the debris.

Two days before the cranes were dropped, NOFD Fire Chief Tim McConnell described the plan as both cranes having their counterweights and booms fall down against on their masts like umbrellas, followed by explosives severing the bases of the masts.
Then, McConnell said, the entire assemblies would fall down
Notably, McConnell's narrative omits exactly where each "closed umbrella" crane assembly was intended to fall.
quote:
"The plan is to slice a cable supporting the boom, dropping both sides vertically like two arms swinging down to one’s sides. Then they plan to implode the massive central tower’s support so that the entire assembly falls into the Hard Rock Hotel footprint. If it works, the whole process should happen within seconds.
"McConnell said the process could be likened to an umbrella closing.
“"'The goal is to bring it down right where it is and stay at the same location,' he said."
THEN...
quote:
After the demolition, McConnell said the Canal Street crane boom ending up over the top of the hotel - dangling over the street - was what was planned.
McConnell is a buffoon

We're eventually going to learn that the cause of the collapse was a mix of design flaw, means and methods, corner cutting, and an apathetic attitude towards proper construction practices.
Or, we'll never learn the real reasons why the building collapsed. But, I suspect the causes are what I listed above.

The city will end up spending millions on this.

It will take months and months, maybe longer to figure out the root cause. There are so many variables to consider.
San Fran's transportation hub (SalesForce Transit Center) Opening was stalled for 278 days to figure out the problem with the beams and then make the repairs.

Gonna be a while, and my guess, is it was multiple causes. Poor design, poor methods, poor materials, etc.
The last thing I heard was that contractor bids are due tomorrow for a plan to stabilize the building, enough to get the bodies out, and then demolish.
I think there's a good chance that those bodies will never be recovered, at least not unless they happen to find them while clearing out the demolished building. So, so terrible.
It's bad enough to die in a workplace accident, but for your family to not even be able to give you a proper burial? Awful.

I'm a structural engineer and there is one thing my previous boss told me early on in my career, "We check, double check, and triple check our calculations and do the same thing with the construction drawings, but we have no control on how this thing is going to be built and who is doing it."

Seems as though the local politicians should have waited to take a victory lap until the bodies have been recovered. Since the cranes were blown up it has been crickets. Guess it just gets scheduled with the other infrastructure decay in the city.
