Hard Rock Hotel Collapse Followup

Still not seeing much in terms of actual cause.
This Link Says that there is still no known cause.
This Link has several lawsuits alleging the following.
Based on everything I've seen, the design is without a doubt the cause. Were there early reports that a smaller ground crane fell into the building setting off the domino effect? That doesn't seem logical.
I suppose this will be wrapped up in litigation for years to come.
In the meantime, bodies of two people are still in the debris and can't be recovered due to safety concerns. Sucks for that family.

whats going to suck going forward is that this is going to just be an empty lot/eye sore for the next 10+ years while this is going through whatever legal process is in front of them

That’s terrible. This whole matter sounds like it should have happened in a third-world country, not the US.

No, they have not due to safety concerns. They know where one of the bodies is located, and have a good idea as to the location of the other. They are waiting for an engineered approved safety plan before taking any further steps with regard to activities at the building.

I just don't see them recovering the bodies in the building's current condition. They start moving pieces of concrete could result in more collapse of the building and cost additional lives. Sad to say that they are going to potentially have to demolish the entire building and then try to recover the bodies while cleaning up the debris.

We're eventually going to learn that the cause of the collapse was a mix of design flaw, means and methods, corner cutting, and an apathetic attitude towards proper construction practices.
Or, we'll never learn the real reasons why the building collapsed. But, I suspect the causes are what I listed above.

It will take months and months, maybe longer to figure out the root cause. There are so many variables to consider.
San Fran's transportation hub (SalesForce Transit Center) Opening was stalled for 278 days to figure out the problem with the beams and then make the repairs.

Gonna be a while, and my guess, is it was multiple causes. Poor design, poor methods, poor materials, etc.
The last thing I heard was that contractor bids are due tomorrow for a plan to stabilize the building, enough to get the bodies out, and then demolish.
I think there's a good chance that those bodies will never be recovered, at least not unless they happen to find them while clearing out the demolished building. So, so terrible.
It's bad enough to die in a workplace accident, but for your family to not even be able to give you a proper burial? Awful.

I'm a structural engineer and there is one thing my previous boss told me early on in my career, "We check, double check, and triple check our calculations and do the same thing with the construction drawings, but we have no control on how this thing is going to be built and who is doing it."

Seems as though the local politicians should have waited to take a victory lap until the bodies have been recovered. Since the cranes were blown up it has been crickets. Guess it just gets scheduled with the other infrastructure decay in the city.
