Looking to get a shotgun for my 14 year old son. I am not very familiar with shotguns especially pump action as I have always just shot crack barrels. He has some Bass Pro cards he wants to put up towards one. I figured I would get a 12 gauge for him but wasn't sure of brands and models I should look at. The budget is between $300-$500.

I saw Bass Pro has some Stoeger's and Benelli's within that budget. Any input is greatly appreciated.

Most important thing for shotguns is fit IMO.

Is he still growing? Being able to adjust length of pull could be an important consideration.

I got a supernova back in 2008. Still works great.

It's a good first shotgun. Some think it's ugly, but it's very versatile. I've used it dove hunting, turkey hunting, and almost everything else in between.

I saved up and bought an 870 Express 12 guage when I was 15. I've had it for about 20 years now. I've used it as a spear, a paddle, a club, and a gun. The only time it ever gave me trouble was when it spent a few hours underwater and the wood swole up so much I couldnt cycle it. its killed 20 or so Turky, a few deer, quite a few ducks, a million dove, and a bunch of squirrels. They are cheap enough to where if he doesnt like it or doesnt fit just buy home something else.

Go with a Beretta over and under. May be on the expensive side, but it is safe. He really doesn't need a third shot.

Back in the 60's dad got a Marlin bolt 20 ga so I wouldn't waste shells. I was 13 and about the same size as your son. I hunted a lot in not the best place, a rice field on the edge of our neighborhood with permission from the landowner as long as I killed nutria which he gave me 50 cents each for. I shot way more nutria than I saw ducks, dove or quail

I was looking for a 20 gauge for my 11 year old son. Ended up with a 12 automatic and he loves it. Remington 1100. Shooting light loads and he doesn't complain about recoil at all. I just need to get the stock cut down to fit him better.

If he's right handed then just start him off with a Mossberg 88.

Bought my son a Stoeger last year. Benelli action with a lot lower price tag.
ETA: and it comes with a turkey choke.

Yildiz 20G Over/Under. My 11yr old has the youth model and its a great gun for the money. His first trip out with it he killed a big Tom @ 35 yards. I am 6' and I could shoot it if I needed to.

I bought my 13 year old son a tristar 20 guage from Walmart for less than $300 before squirrel season this year. He absolutely loves it. Normally we squirrel hunt until deer season, then the shotguns go up, but he was so addicted to shooting it, he went 10 more times during deer season.
