I was born in the early 90s so I've only ever known an almost fully realized interstate system. What were these roads like before the interstate? Were most of them existing state highways that were re purposed to meet interstate standards? Were things like the Ponchartrain expressway that cuts through downtown new orleans still there or was that not added until the interstate? Same with the spillway portion of the interstate. Interested how that evolved and if it was over natural road ways or they just started cutting through cities and country land with new roads.

The local cops used to write a lot more tickets also.

Dinosaurs everywhere. The interstates allowed more efficient migratory patterns of nutria and alligators who then subsequently wiped out the dinosaurs in the southern part of the state. Since north Louisiana doesn’t have any interstates yet, the dinosaurs are free to roam and graze on landscaping and people as they see fit. JBE will fix this once he can get both eyes focused on the issue.

You had to get off I-49 and drive through Alexandria all the way up until 1996.

I always take 49 to 71 to 190 to BR.

before 49 71 took forever. I was a kid then so driving to the grocery store took forever as well

You'll find this hard to believe, but cousins were marrying one another in Vermilion Parish. The interstate was a proximate cause of the decline of traditional Cajun society - not that it was an entirely bad thing.

All the roads are still there. You can take a Sunday drive and experience it.

The ponchartrain expressway follows the railway, which has been there for years.

Not just in LA but everywhere, railroads played a much larger part in passenger transportation.

I used to get on the interstate 10 at Airline Hwy towards New Orleans when it was dirt and we would hunt ducks along it. Lots of good pass shooting.

Siegan Lane was gravel.

3+ hours to travel between Laffy and Lake Chuck. If you traveling between Lake Chuck and Baton Rouge, it was Hwy 190 via Longville and Hwy 171 about 6 hours to get to an LSU game from Lake Chuck

lots of two lane roads. Alex to S'port was either via 71 or 1. If yiu were going to Dallas from S'port you got on HWY 80 whice was four lane as you hit TX.

For BR most took 71 from Alex until it got to 190.

Lafayette from Alex Hwy 167.

We put up with the two lanes as there was nothing else at the time. Then I 10 and I 20 git built. I 49 would come along some years later. The old days were ok in terms of car travel but with what we have now, I sure as hell wouldn't want to return to those days in terms of the Hwy factor.
