One Bettor's Dilemma Holding a Valuable Heisman Wager on Joe Burrow

Matt Porter feels like he’s trapped inside some corny game show with a host staring him down, a live audience hanging on his decision, bright lights shining in his face. Take the money now or risk losing it for double! Porter, a 41-year-old originally from Illinois, is in a real-life gambling game show. In June, he placed a $50 bet that LSU quarterback Joe Burrow would win the Heisman Trophy. Given Burrow’s relative unfamiliarity and LSU’s long-standing offensive ineptitude, he got the odds at a cool 200 to 1. About four months later, Porter is in line to win $10,000 if the current betting favorite takes home the Heisman Trophy, but he’s got a decision to make.
This week, his gambling outfit offered him $3,865.38 to cash out his bet. It has since dropped to $3,500. Take the money and run? Or let it ride for a potential bigger check? “I feel like I’m playing 'Deal or No Deal' or 'Let’s Make a Deal,'” he laughs during an interview this week from his home in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

He wanted to gamble, so he should gamble.
Joe Burrow will not fail.

Uh, keep my money stacked up on #9.

Cash out the $3,500 and then bet $3,450 on Burrow winning. Now you're playing with house money.

then bet $3,450 on Burrow winning
Burrow is now 1:1 odds to win it
So he’d only win $3450 for a total of $6900
He’s better off cashing it out and not betting a damn thing or letting it ride.

I already spent my $50. I would let it ride. I'm getting what I paid for - a chance at $10k.

Related question:
I hold six rsvps to the championship. They are redeemable only if LSU plays in the final game.
When LSU makes the playoff, I will be able to sell them for enough to take an all paid trip to the semi. If LSU loses the semi, my rsvps are worthless.
So do I bank the semifinal or bet on the championship?
(I’ve already decided it will be the ‘Ship, but I thought about it. I never bet against LSU.$

I tend to agree with you, but the issue is not necessarily Burrow. You have a bevy of (sometimes ignorant) Heisman voters that could pass over the best candidate (see Peyton Manning).

I have 2 lower reservations. I am already being offered twice what I paid. I can imagine after we beat Bama it will skyrocket.
Could be a head over heart decision in the works...

Quit while you're ahead. Heisman is subjective and determined by voters, not players on the field.

You also have the probability of the media campaigning for somebody else at some point. They love to flip and flop on these things to catch eyeballs. Joe is their pick now, but at some point . . . they'll turn on him.

This is the correct answer.

I'm a gambler, not opposed to risk. I'd take the $3500 though. Jmo
