Let's say the completed the painting yesterday and they know rain is 100% tonight. Do they tarp the field and leave the tarp in place thru the worst rain?

No. The field will drain just fine.

The field has a good amount of slope to it and drains fast

tarping a turtleback is pretty fricking stupid.

The retractable roof will keep TS dry. No worries baw.

Go tarp your yard for a full day of rain and tell me what it looks like when you pull it up.

I dont doubt that. Drying is different than draining. The soil under the gras would still be saturated and "softer"

Ill let all of MLB and other sports know what you think.

MLB doesn't tarp the whole field. Just the infield which is much smaller that a football field. Plus bare dirt...

Why? Is there something about a turtleback field that makes it impervious to water? Sure, the slope of the field helps facilitate drainage. But it's not as if it is done instantaneously. Otherwise no football field would ever be saturated during a game, and we know that is not true.
I'm sure there must be a reason why they don't cover the field, but I don't see how it could hurt to try to mitigate the amount of water the field receives until the point where it has to be uncovered. It seems that less water entering the ground would = quicker drainage.

I can remember when our field drainage was deplorable. It was mud soup. Our turf management peeps have come a long way.

There is a $2,000,000 drainage system under the field, it will drain quickly!

I remember a game against MSU 96ish that it was a mud pit after a morning rain. I Also remember them rolling sand into the grass to help drainage for for 2-3 games every time someone drug their foot a trail of sand kicked up.

Thanks for the link, eelsuee.
Where are the "thank you Allevas??"

LSU Athletic Director Joe Alleva said Wednesday that the school will rip out the football field at Tiger Stadium next summer and dig eight feet deep to replace the water drainage system which does not drain properly.
