I knew it was gonna be surgery when the last pre season game we had two sources; One saying several weeks and one saying he will play today.

When you have a huge range like that it usally means the timetable depends on the surgery

Dude, a meniscal tear is 100% recoverable and just because you have a form of evasive surgery does not automatically give you arthritis. Your googling is inaccurate unfortunately. I had 3 shoulder surgeries and 1 knee surgery when I was somewhat athletic. Now I’m of the normal dad bod status and I have arthritis in my shoulder, but literally zero issues in my knee to include strength, ROM, or stability. It’s all injury, person and rehab dependent.

I was using that for context lol. You can have arthritis from one injury and not another. There are so many variables involving the musculoskeletal system. Some people recover from torn ACL and Achilles like they never happened, for others they are career Enders. It just depends.

If it’s just the meniscus and not the root then he should come back fine with the doctors and trainers he will have at his disposal. Plus he’s still only 19 not 30

And congrats with almost finishing. If I had to do it over again I would have been a PA or NP blahhh.

funny I have that conversation all the time. its great but such a pain lol. but thanks man

Does this help at all?

definitely makes sense. anchoring it down will provide more long-term stability because you're essentially making the ligament stronger, similar to the tightrope procedure Tua Tagovailoa just had. whereas trimming it you're trying to preserve what you already have. it's strange to me that there is so little blood flow from the geniculates.

I wasn't sure if you could use a repair for a partial meniscal tear. theoretically it makes sense, practically it doesn't. I was asking myself if it would've been better if Zion completely tore it therefore going for a repair as opposed to partial tear & doing a meniscectomy.

I was also thinking if his gait, his play style, or both contributed to the lateral tear. it's interesting since we mostly see medial injuries.

anyway thanks man I appreciate your insight. also apologies for the late response. board stuff

you aren't wrong, but you aren't right either. yes much of it is injury, person, and rehab dependent, but you also have certain procedures that put patient's at higher risks for future issues regardless of who you are or how you rehab

if its a repair, you're essentially restoring the meniscus back to it's original form. and that will protect the joint space

if it's a trim, you have less meniscus to cushion that joint. that will lead to joint space narrowing. which leads to bone rubbing against bone which will lead to arthritis. could arthritis be avoided? sure. does this procedure put Zion at a higher risk? yes

When we’re talking arthitis at a younger age is that arthritis at 40 instead of 70 or arthritis at 27 instead of 70.

I imagine almost every basketball player ends up with sore knees you get than most people. But will it affect his career?

we are talking potential signs of arthritis at age 40

that's what research says. however research is done studying average joes like you and me. not physically superior 19 yo athletes.

While true for a normal human being, Zion will probably be logging over 2000 mins per season for a number of years (hopefully), and that is quite the wear and tear that most humans don't experience.

He will eventually pay for it in around mid 30’s, maybe a little later. That’s a guess... doesn’t mean it will happen. But that’s what I think. Everyone has and will get it, including us.
