Surely it isn’t the same as watching Kobe win those titles, right? That’s really my only point here.

Probably not. I'm sure lifelong Lakers fans don't have the same connection to Lebron as they do Kobe, and probably never will even if Lebron rattled off 2 or 3 straight titles I'd imagine.

But they'll still be happy as shite they got those hypothetical titles they won't get because they're going to stink and give those draft picks to the Pels

Maybe, although I really liked Magic too. He was the first sports star I remember really being a big fan of.

I won't deny part of that was probably that they were winning and he was getting attention from that, but I was 6-7 years old. I'm not sure how much I was processing at that point.

I didn't come from a family who liked basketball, so I didn't get anything passed down to me from family, either. I'd wager that those are the major reasons people become fans. Proximity, family or just finding a team you like.

Unless the Lakers were the closest team to your hometown, I have zero respect for this argument. It is bandwagoning all the way.

Other than the obvious cliche answer I gave, this is a great point.

The Lakers have been bottom 5 bad for almost a decade now, something basically all Lakers fans have never had to deal with by a long shot.

The connection at this point is probably the hope and promise this team brought, a feeling Lakers fans are more used to than just about any other team, but haven't felt in almost a decade.

it's so weird that people care what team a 5 year old kid decided to like when there was no team in his hometown.

Yeah this is a fair point, too.

I don't give a shite which team a 5 year old picks. I don't give a shite what team a 30 year old picks.

But I will call them out for being a bandwaggoner.

Also weird to say you just don't care while saying you have ZERO RESPECT for something.

That's a pretty darn big signal to say you care on some level.

You also just assume he chose the team due to winning, but you don't actually know that. If you've been a fan of 1 team your entire life, by definition, you are not a bandwagon fan. If that poster completely disappeared and stopped caring/following when the Lakers sucked, then yes he is a bandwagon. If he's been loyal throughout, he's objectively not a bandwagon fan.

I'd say I'm sorry that 6 year old me didn't break out his atlas and ruler to triangulate the nearest NBA team, but I'm not actually sorry.

6 year old me just started liking the Lakers without a family or home team and 38 year old me is ok with that.

the Lakers jersey is what connects the fan to the team/roster, and that just kinda trumps all the other stuff.

You're a fan of the team first and foremost. I didn't have much of an opinion about Drew Brees years ago, now I love the man. Same thing with Alvin Kamara, Cam Jordan, Taysom Hill, Michael Thomas etc.

There are guys who I think are bums. If they would end up with the Saints, my opinion would flip overnight, as long as they perform halfway well on the field and stay out of trouble.

I mean, as pro sports fans, we're largely rooting for laundry. Players come and go and if you root for a team for decades your fandom is based on moments big and small. My Saints memories include everything from the Super Bowl win to the first game I went to as an 11 year old when they stunk up the Dome. We contort our opinions of athletes to fit largely based on what jersey they have on at the moment. It's dumb, but fan is short for fanatic.

I'm not a Lakers fan, but if LeBron and AD landed on my team in the span of a year, dear God, I would be overjoyed. And I would love the cries from the haters eaten up with jealousy over the fact their team didn't have those guys. And championships are championships. If the Lakers win it all with a couple of mercenaries, so be it.

Lebron of course.

He is a generational talent. Enjoy watching him play while it lasts.

This. It's gone from "Showtime" to a dumpster fire, but there are signs of life and I'm actually looking forward to Lakers games again.

I stuck with the Lakers when their PG switched from Magic Johnson to Sedale Threatt. That was the abrupt end of Showtime.
