Been working out with free weights for years. started ot dvelop arthritus in my right shoulder. Meds, rest and shots did not help the issue..I had arthroscopic shoulder surgery on my right shoulder end of May 19 to clean up bone spurs and shave some bone make a little room in the subacromial space. I took 6 weeks off of upper body work except physical therapy. Started easing back into some light weight dumb bell work (10-20lbs) in early August and was sticking with that.
Last week I did some dumbell incline presses with 30lbs dumbells and experienced discomfort and soreness in the joint that reminded me of my pre op condition pain though not as bad. Has anyone had the same surgery and how long did you wait before upper body weight training?

You should probably follow your therapist’s and doctor’s advice man.

Post rotator cuff surgery, the doc was very specific on how much and when I could lift. I’d make a call.

He was specific for the first couple months post.. after that jut said take it slow and if it hurts stop... that what I 'm doing...
I'm just curious when others began to return to heavier lifting (if ever) .

Had the same problem for the same reason. Had the same surgery (subacromial decompression), but mine was an open procedure. While my day to day recovery was quite quick, I really wasn't able to get back to anything close to what I was doing before at the gym for about a year. And even then it was with some major adjustments in how I did things, with significant limitations in certain movements.
Talk to your surgeon. Then talk to a good trainer who understands the mechanics of this stuff.

Hate to be a downer, but I injured my shoulder in a car accident about six years ago, then had had a period of frozen shoulder. I still have to use lower weights for most shoulder workouts than I used to before.
I had to begin with nothing more than rubber bands, for what seemed like forever, and hitting points in the rotation which were extremely painful. But I will say this, working out with low weights, I’m talking for a long time in the 10-20 range and now 30-50 pound dumbbells, has really helped with the healing and mobility. If you accept the fact that you have to go low and slow, you can get back close enough.

You need a PT to prescribe your exercises.
