Should we make the bar exam a whole lot harder? What else can be done?

The over-saturation of the legal profession and the proliferation of flat-out stupid people becoming lawyers has reached an unsustainable rate. It has been bad for a while, but I've recently seen several lawyers that must be only partially literate. How do these people become attorneys?

I feel like they could somehow cut the amount of lawyers in half and increase the overall quality dramatically if we just made the Bar Exam much, much harder. Is that possible?

What else could be done?

FWIW, I'm not an attorney, but several members of my family are.

It's just like every other job. The market will eventually weed most of them out. A few will find a way to slide by for a full career.

Of course

But first you should make law school a whole lot more selective. This method is better than making the bar harder

I also think it should be 2 years of law school 2 years as an apprentice before you get your law degree

Look at how many Law Graduates SU is churning out. You think that’s going to stop any time soon?

I just feel like existing lawyers would want to rally together to make the bar exam much harder.

That is in their best interest if less lawyers are entering the market and the overall reputation of the profession improves.

Maybe law schools are too strong of an influence and don't want to turn off that revenue stream.

I’m taking the PE exam in a couple of weeks. The power exam had a pass rate of 43% and 50% the last two times it was administered. I was astonished at the pass rate of the bar exam when that thread was posted a few days ago.

Doesn't matter if these shitty schools graduate students really. The problem is these people are still able to pass the bar and practice, despite being morons with a poor education.

shite, use the med school model.

4 years in school, pass a much harder bar exam, 3 years minimum residency.

That'll weed some folks out

California bar overall pass rate is less than 50% (all test takers regardless of how many times taken). Still tons of lawyers in Cali.

I don't know if this is really happening

They just become personal injury trash lawyers and convince dumb people to hire them.

The more you weed out, the more expensive the rest of us become.

That's partially true. It's the way the insurance system has developed in our country.

Let's just pretend the bar is out of 100.

Why not say you must get 90/100 AND be in the top 30% of test takers that year? They can slowly transition into a model that makes it harder each year until they get to the point they desire.

Tort reform? Start putting in place rules like CPAs have for C-level positions?
