Oh look, a tough guy that wants to play world police. If you care so much then go put on a uniform and fly to the middle east do it yourself.

The majority of this board would rather be reactive and play defense rather than be proactive and play offense. Geopolitics isn't simple, and with the world shrinking due to technological advances, it isn't a game. Isolationism and world peace are on opposite sides of the balanced scale of pipe dreams that people believe are possible.

Which other civilized countries are doing this..."saving the uncivilized" via troops in their lands?

It's not an issue of civilized vs uncivilized. It's pro-life vs pro-comfort.

Truth is American presence saves lives, and typically when people start dying, it's the bad guys.

We have an all-volunteer military. They didn't sign up to guard bridges in Kansas. They signed up to protect and defend the constitution of the United States. Keeping the peace helps advance that mission, and most of them are proud to do it.

Send your sons and nephews over to die for the Kurds.

Otherwise, STFU.

That doesn't answer my question.

fricking facepalm that people believe there are strategic American interests in this situation that are worth sending kids over there to risk their lives.

There's an oil pipeline benefitting some elites and their cronies in Europe. That's it. Nothing else.

So all those 58,000+ that died for the South Vietnamese were a waste? Tell their families that.

They were part of a global effort that kept Communism from being the One World Government. And we should be grateful for them and every solider who ever stood between civilians and brutal authoritarian.

I'm comfy being "reactive" if and when Syria or some other player in this conflict attacks Americans.

Stop pretending like this civil war is a conflict that impacts Americans, except those who are invested either politically (corruption) or directly financially in oil pipeline interests in the region.

You're acting like it's in Canada or Mexico or something.

That's insulting to intelligent, free-thinking people.

Absolutely they were wasted. Without a fricking doubt.

Patriotism and finding meaning after the fact doesn't change the reality that they were American lives wasted in a proxy-war against Communism, which we lost.

Had we not sent ONE kid over there to die, the end result would have been the same--a Communist Vietnam.

I’ve never been able to wrap my head around Syria, Turkey, and the Kurds, so probably shouldn’t comment, but what exactly are our troops on the ground in Syria doing for us? If we can pull them out, and still be able to wreck shite if need be, then why not pull them out?

I got called Bolton just this weekend, but can someone explain to me why we should have troops in Syria, if we don’t have to?

I would agree over the long run that us having 1,000 troops in Syria to mostly prevent a larger scale conflict between Turkey and the Kurds is not ideal. But there's a huge difference between a strategic withdrawal, giving the Kurds time to prepare and negotiate with Assad and Russia, vs. what Trump has done.

The real question you should ask yourself is, is it in America's interests to put 50,000 troops into Kurdish territory in Iraq and Syria so as to secure the formation of the state of Kurdistan?

Because if we back Kurdish independence in Syria, it will take at least 50,000 troops to support that commitment and to win the war that is almost sure to come.

Turkey, Syria, Iran and Iraq are not going to give up that land without a fight. There’s no scenario where negotiating for the land is possible either as that’s not how their cultures work, especially over something so sensitive as a full blown state and the size of the land we're talking about here. Might makes right is the prevailing philosophy over there.

We like the Kurds, sure, but at the end of the day what's in it for us to make that kind of sacrifice? You do that and you now have Iraq, Iran and Turkey forming a formal alliance against you to do God knows what.

And the way I see it it's an either-or proposition. Turkey is going to move into Syria because Turkey is tired of Syria destabilizing their southern border. You can't stop that with the 50 or 100 American troops you have left. So either you go all in with 50,000 troops or more to secure an independent Kurdistan, which eventually leads to the gobbling up of a good third of southern and western Turkey and a major war in the process, or YEAH, it's time to get out.

Do tell us how many troops are there currently and what action we could take going forward to resolve a 100+ year conflict without losing any more US lives or spending any more $$.

I'll wait.

Other countries need to get involved and do their part if it's such a crisis. These are people fighting a cultural/tribal war that has no end.
