Maybe it's the school, not the coach. Wisconsin D is dominating.

Wisky had a dominating defense when Aranda was there. That 2015 Defense at Wisky was #4 for total D. That same year LSU was #9.
In 2014, it was Wisky at #7, LSU at #15.
In 2013, LSU was #8, Wisconsin was #15.
AVERAGE: Wisky: #9, LSU: #11
Since Aranda arrived at LSU, though:
2016: Wisky #7, LSU #10
2017: Wisky #2, LSU #12
2018: Wisky #29, LSU #25
2019: Wisky #1, LSU #15
Average: Wisky #10, LSU #16
Prior to those years, LSU's total D was:
2013 - 15
2012 - 8
2011 - 2
2010 - 12
AVERAGE: #9
In fact, if you take the seven years before Aranda, LSU's D ranked an average of #10.
Since he arrived, it's now averaging #16.
And it's Wisconsin that is averaging #10 since he left and Jim Leonard, in his first stint as a defensive coordinator, took over.
To be fair, though, Wisky's D averaged #17 in the four years pre-Aranda, so he improved them greatly to an average of #9.
Too bad he hasn't done the same for LSU.
And for those who would argue that 2018 was an outlier, and if not for that, LSU's D would have an average ranking of #12, then in fairness, do the same for Wisky. Throw out their 2018 as an outlier.
They would be averaging #3.
Downvote away.

Actually interesting.
College has for sure evolved but regardless this is pretty thought provoking.

Some things never change. Wisconsin seems to produce droids that fit their style and have for 30+ years. That goes for their offense and defense.

This is very interesting stats. Thanks for sharing.

Fail! None of this changed since Aranda left.

My boy, Bobby, is wrecking shite up there.

While your statistical analysis is correct, you aren’t factoring one part of the equation that could make huge impact on those statistics, or it might not at all. I don’t know the answer to the question, I am just bringing it up as a factor that could make a difference in the equation.
So, prior to the last 5 years most of the offenses in the SEC were run style offenses and the dominant teams, were defensively geared to stop the run. That same dynamic exists in the Big Ten. Now with the SEC offenses almost all going to the spread, look in the west, LSU, Bama, Ole Piss, aTm, Arky, and hurry up with Auburn. The SEC is scoring more therefore maybe the numbers don’t look as good. Where the Big Ten isn’t like that yet.
Just trying to maybe bring some thought to the table to give you the answer as to why maybe

quote:Correct. All things being equal, the visual of a lumbering offense is eroding in the Big Ten. The only way to make a true, fair comparison is to factor the overall offensive success of each team's foes.

Not saying Aranda is bad or good. He's obviously good, but could he do better?
The stats as I applied them say, "yes".

LSU has had like 3 bad defenses since 2000. So is it the school or the coach?

How do they keep finding these really good OL? Every year they seem to have at least 1-2 OL get drafted. Got one starting right now at RT today in the Superdome.

Was a big "early" fan of Aranda. However, think he is greatly over paid, and only above "average" last couple years.

Or maybe it’s tgelevel of competition they play.

get back to me when Wisconsin plays Alabama, Auburn, and Florida every year with Georgia and Texas sprinkled in.

Maybe...just maybe it might be the conference and what makes up the conference in competition.

i really wish i could figure out why there is this push to discredit Aranda. It at least made some sense when there was heat on Orgeron that the O pumpers where trying to deflect it but why now that the team is playing fantastic and O is getting huge props for his willingness to open the offense?
So far this year we had a bad half against a top 10 team on the road and a couple of bad drives in games there was zero chance we would lose. Yesterday we had the most dominating defensive performance of the year and someone here is trying to discredit DA

Right. Nothing changed for Wisconsin. But it did for Aranda. He has to scheme for far better competition.
Or maybe they just hired another good defensive coordinator.
