Our mind can't even comprehend how big the universe is
Actually, we have a pretty good grasp on how big it is; therefore our comprehension is a-okay. Putting it into quantitative terms is a different story.
quote:
We are a grain of sand.
That's a criminal understatement of our significance in terms of the percentage of matter that we take up in regard to the universe as a whole.
quote:
To think that we live on the only place where there is life is pretty arrogant. What makes us so special?
If you look at the prerequisites that apply for a planet with advanced life like ours to exist, it's not arrogant at all to believe that we are alone. The universe is huge, and one anomaly like us existing amongst all the rest is not so hard to believe when you understand the magnitude of it. There are rare, freak occurrences of galactic events that, while unimaginably momentous, have no bearing on the rest of the Universe's humdrum happenings.
People like you kill me: You chastise others for believing in the process of science in this regard, and yet worship it otherwise. As it stands, given what we know, you are nothing if not a conspiracy theorist. Meaning, what else do we have to go by, reasonably speaking? Ghost stories? Assumptions like yours? We only know what we know, and what we know right now is that the statistical chance of there being another planet with life as advanced as ours is extremely low.
What we know right now is that we know of no other life.
I'll guarantee you that within the lifetime of every individual reading this post, that we wont have concrete, scientific proof otherwise- in regard to life as advanced as ours existing. Certainly not to the point where said life can outrun an apex technological advancement like an FA 18. That is how hopelessly big the universe is.
It's an absolutely reasonable stance to take, until noted otherwise. That is the very premise of science.
quote:
What makes us so special?
Only a fool speaks of that which he does not know.
I have some non-groundbreaking, common-knowledge news for you: We are very, very special- mindbogglingly-special- when you look at the statistics and physics of what took/takes place for us and our planet to thrive.
You are the arrogant one who needs to think.

Fantastic rebuttal.
Typical of the run-of-the-mill OT'er who believes that defying the scientific method (until it means saving their life, etc.) is a reasonable, educated response.
Poor little dumbarse bigappletiger, you are the special one.
Get yourself an education and try to keep up.

Why do you think that the stars have to be aligned just so for us to be alive on this planet? Is it not much more plausible that we (life) adapted to what THIS planet had to offer in terms of life sustaining nutrients, physics, etc.? You don’t think it’s possible there are species out there that evolved on their planet that is nothing like ours and are walking around with legs made of mercury or some shite? It’s just as plausible. It’s just as arrogant to think that conditions have to be “just so” for life as it is to think we are alone.

There is nothing wrong with a skeptical perspective, but the following needs to be considered:
There is acknowledged phenomena (by the US Navy) that is defying current known physics/science
The phenomena may not be a completely physical phenomena thereby proving difficult to be validated by human material reductionist science
I have encountered folks who make the same argument you do (the prior linked thread goes into great depth). The claim typically is as follows:
Science cannot validate this situation, so it is not worth pursuing (implying it does not exist in their mental framework)
Neil Tyson DeGrasse has taken this approach on this topic
I would argue that it is a lazy and an anti-intellectual position to hold
The counter argument is: what the hell is it that is being witnessed? It is there and real /unexplainable by science
At the end of the day, we have to stop and consider that our tools of perception (including the scientific method) may be incomplete (as it is for the hard problem of human consciousness...)

The issue with this and many other responses to the possibility of intelligent life visiting our planet is they are viewed through a humans perspective. We would colonize. We would mine resources and destroy planet to get them. We would view lesser life as insignificant.
Human beings colonize, concur, harvest, destroy. It doesn’t mean that all intelligent life is the same.
Wrong.
Until there are no need for resources (the replicator debate), life itself is a mere battle for resources that allow continuity of the species and expansion of it to its natural limits. colonizing, harvesting, destroying, these are nothing more than exercises to gain and control resources to further expand, propagate, and continue the species. Any organism will do this unless they have limitless resources, which could be relative to their footprint and need).
Humans do this. Monkeys do this. Insects do this.
Aliens will do this, unless they've created infinite resources. Technically, energy in the universe is limited as we know it, and until we break that rule, every living thing will be fighting to control as big a piece of that as they are capable.

Yes sir I shall, Paul Hellyer was the Defense Minister of Canada and Hellyer is the first high ranking government official to publicly state that ET’s are “present in our skies and several EBE’s are currently in contact with the American government and our top secret level operations and black budget projects”. Please google Paul Hellyer UFO’s and a wealth of better information will pop up.

Is there evidence that Paul Hellyer had access to classified information in the US Government? It sounds like he came up with this idea on his own because he says he saw a UFO once while doing something unrelated to his job.
He also says there are 4 different races of Aliens that visit Earth and that there are aliens on Venus, Mars, and on the moons of Saturn.

Bob Lazar does sound whacky, but in the podcast the commander says the spacecraft Lazar saw is similar to what he saw.

Once there is evidence, the fermi paradox is moot/doesn't apply, no longer exists...

It's very fair to criticize human perception...
The tool used here is a tracking pod, FLIR, laser targeting, meaning the pod identified movement of a physical object and tracked it...if it were light/not physical, the laser would be disrupted and not reflected back and tracked...
So the object is material enough to fool the laser receiving sensor or computer in the targeting pod...
Occams razor says it's material and real...not that it couldn't be, but the likeliest explanation is it is so...combine that with proofs we can manipulate matter, time, gravity means we likely have a material object that does so...
So it very well could be from a where, or a when but it is likely not a figment or a glamour/illusion of sorts.
