Can you be pretty good at what you do, and yet still lazy AF?

I think I'm there.

Yeah. That is certainly better than trying hard and sucking at your job.

Uh, ya. I'm a shining example.
Then again I'm paid for what might happen, not for what I do day to day.

No, I have to work the phones, scour the web, and check out things in person to do a decent job.

If you are so efficient that you can do more in fewer hours, why would you not fill that time up with more work?

Yes. And depending on what field you are in that can be considered a good thing.
There is a story (apocryphal) about an officer talking about what to do with specific combinations of smart/dumb and hard working / lazy.
Smart and lazy was a prized group because those individuals will try to find you the most efficient way of doing something in order to spare themselves a lot of headache.
The combo of dumb and hardworking are the kinds of people you want to get rid of ASAP because they will keep fricking up things because they want to put in effort but aren’t competent to do so.

Work yourself out of a job
If there is no increased incentive for someone to use their efficiency skills other than earning themselves more work, there is no carrot. Only the stick.
Now, if you implement a system where the best, most efficient workers are nicely compensated for being the best, you’ll see them shine.

Because, as someone above me said, its about a good work / life balance. I'm also not someone with a strong drive to be rich, expand wealth, etc.
If I can work enough to make a good income, put some money in the bank, take care of all my needs in a manner - I'd rather use that extra time for hobbies like trying to figure out to play golf, reading, fishing, writing, I'm a happier person (I don't work a set work xxx hours a week schedule have specific PTO, etc.)
Also, i certainly will put in the necessary 16 hour day(s) when something fricks up or scheduling results in a lot of stuff coming due at the same time.

In my case I've automated most of my day to day tasks through powershell, bash, and python. Working on some orchestration stuff for our incident response procedures now.
My main goal is to spend all day doing nothing but security research. I'm about 75% of the way there.

I work in automation. It's literally my job description.
