We used to joke that Gary is the Pine Bluff of the north (or vice versa).

not bad

I never want to visit anywhere worse than Pine Bluff, although to be far there are lots of places in the MS/AR delta as bad or worse that don't qualify as "cities"

There’s a lot of urban elitism in this article

They were nice to the Chicago metro by only including Gary. There are a few others that probably belong like Harvey or Calumet City.

Presumably there was a minimum size.

Ferriday would be on this list but it's probably not big enough to qualify. The worst poverty I've seen in the US is in the Mississippi delta though. I'm sure some areas in Appalachia are as bad but I haven't traveled that area extensively.

Ferriday is one big town of unemployment. I've never seen on a Tuesday afternoon more people standing around by their hoopties and doing nothing. Vidalia is one town over and you see barely any of that.

Northwest Arkansas May be the most underrated region of the country.

On the other hand, south Arkansas to the delta is the most overlooked shithole in the country.

I drove through Ferriday a few months ago at like 9am on a weekday and there were people walking up and down the street everywhere. My wife isn't from Louisiana and she said "yuck, where are we?"

Can anyone point to any of these cities that are not run by Democratic leadership?

I've done the inverse. I've never been to the delta but I've traveled Appalachia extensively. Parts of Appalachia in the 80's were the worst I've seen in the US.

These lists are usually related to data which has little to do with things to do in a city. They're trash lists.

I've driven through West Virginia and the coal country areas of Ohio but mostly stayed near the interstate.

West Virginia's natural beauty is underrated imo.

Drive through reservation land in the north/northeastern part of AZ. Pretty bad up there. Not unusual to have people living in homes with NO running water up there.
