Bill Belichick: I don't believe in using analytics to make in-game decisions

When the New England Patriots decide to go for it on fourth down, or attempt a two-point conversion, how much does head coach Bill Belichick rely on analytics?
"Less than zero," Belichick said Friday morning.
Belichick, who is preparing his 3-0 team for a road game against the 3-0 Buffalo Bills on Sunday, was asked the question in the aftermath of a notable decision by Philadelphia Eagles head coach Doug Pederson on Thursday night. Pederson elected to go for a two-point conversion with 9:12 remaining in the third quarter. The attempt failed, with the Eagles going ahead 27-20 en route to a 34-27 victory over Green Bay.
Belichick was asked, then, if his decisions are based on his gut.
"I'm not saying it's a gut thing. It's an individual analysis based on the things that are pertinent to that game and that situation," he said. "I don't really care what happened in 1973 and what those teams did or didn't do. I don't really think that matters in this game -- or '83 or '90, pick out whatever you want."
Belichick was asked whether his view of players and their age has changed due to advances in conditioning, exercise science and nutrition.
"It's a really good question," he said. "Personally, I just try to take everything based on what I see, and not try to maybe read too much into other numbers and so forth. As you know, analytics is not really my thing. I don't know if there's any set formula or model for what it is today or what it was some other year. I'm sure you could go to some analytics person and they'd be able to give you a great numerical answer on that."

Analyzing /=/ "using analytics"

Analytics is the discovery, interpretation, and communication of meaningful patterns in data.
He is using analytics he has seen related to that particular in game sequence

It's true. There is a word analytic with a general definition. Then there is the way it's used in modern sports - advanced statistical metrics. You're conflating a general term with one idiosyncratic usage.
Obviously coaches were analyzing long before these metrics were developed.

I compeltely understand what Bill is saying. He doesnt blindly follow advanced metrics in order to make decisions.
However, taking data he has experienced and relying on that information in order to make the best decision is using analytics. There are coaches that absolutely do not do that. "You take the points" "Play field position" etc etc
A fantastic example is when the pats, while up late against the colts, went for it in their own territory on 4th down. They didnt make it and Peyton led the game winning drive
People crushed Bill, however, analytics actually showed Bill made the right decision statistically. Bill was using the data he had seen over his career to make a decision.

I realize you’re trying a “gotcha” but the question was related to historical data, which Belichick says he doesn’t take into account. He’s focused on what’s going on in the here and now, not on what some team did 40 years ago.

I’m not sure how people are confusing the two...

Football guys have been charting plays, cranking out film for tendencies, and studying stats as long as the sport has been around. Then they act macho because Some nerd does the same thing with an excel spreadsheet and called it analytics

Awwww yis. We haven't had a good yell at advanced metrics thread on here in a while

Just because you analyze a game doesn't mean you use advanced analytics
You have the weirdest hard on for the Patriots

He obviously has an analytics guy, but not calling a timeout during the Seahawks Superbowl was obviously a gut call he made just by looking across at the other side of the field.

Bill's eye test > analytics

He has Ernie Adams for that

Rowe added: “He plays a critical part. He’s seen so much film — I remember I asked him about a play and he recalled a play from like the early 2000s and the game and the score. I was like, ‘Oh my Gosh.’ He plays a critical piece. He obviously has an idea of what other teams are going to run against us so we can prepare for them in practice.”
