Kids today need to learn how to entertain themselves/deal with boredom

Went to brunch this morning with a few friends. One couple brought their 5 year old kid. Dude wouldn't stop throwing a tantrum at the table because he was bored and he had nothing to entertain him at a nice restaurant. We all tried to engage him to no avail. The couple ended up having to leave 45 minutes in because the child had a breakdown.
Kids today are losing the art of self-entertainment and just learning to deal with boredom. When I was a kid, boredom was a constant in my life. At the store with my mom, running errands with my dad, staying with my grandparents (who didn't own a TV). BORED. I just dealt with it. Nowadays kids expect to be entertained every waking hour.
We're raising a generation of people who will be unable to be alone with their thoughts.
Well, I use the general "we". I have no kids. You. It's you people.

This.
We played outside in the summer and came back home when it got dark.
Grew up on two channels and ice water.

This is definitely true, but I think it's true with adults now as well. Look around when you're out, everyone on phones because they can't just sit.

Applauded your rant until this. All I could think reading your last line was “ shut the F up then”.

Sounds like your friends are shite at parenting.
Not the kids fault.

All those things are either engaging or a child is free to do something to occupy their time. We don't bring our kids to nice restaurants because they get bored and have to stay in one spot and be quiet for so long. You know what will happen to that little 5 yr old? They'll grow up and mature eventually. Enjoy your high horse and enjoy your childless life

This was a problem when I was a kid in the 70s, though I admit it's worse now thanks to the wired society (no pun intended),
Children have been sentimentalized into little angels, when in fact they're little animals that have to be civilized.
This is the socializing function places like Pizza Hut and Cracker Barrel serve -- to teach kids proper public behavior.

Whole reason sears went out of business. Teenage boys had porn at their fingertips instead of a catalog.

Bringing a kid to a nice restaurant is just asking for trouble. Having a kid sit in one spot like that with no real entertainment is asking for trouble.

I bet a nice slap to the face would've kept him entertained.

That's where it gets difficult, give the kid a phone to shut him up, but that doesn't teach them.
We try to stay off our phones as much as possible around our son, they definitely learn early the instant gratification they provide.

I frequent brunch. I see these kids coming in with tablets. frick that. You sit there and be miserable while the adults enjoy themselves.

That seems weird for a 5 year old.
