I am really baffled at the play of the defense so far, look how the 1 st half against northwestern went. I didn’t think the defense was going to struggle this year

Which team besides Bama is going to torch us? Have you watched Florida, Auburn, Miss State, or A&M? None of their offenses have looked very good.

The “ones” minus Chaisson, Lawrence, Logan, and Divinity. That’s over a third of the starters.

This. Anyone panicking doesn’t know enough about what is going on.

.....and the Golden Girls are fat, the band plays out of tune & the grass in the end zone is ugly.
5 starters were out...there was a natural let down after Texas....they are the number 4 team in the land.
Did you notice that they shut them out in the second half playing back ups most of the 4th quarter.
Can't we all just enjoy the ride & not playing chicken little?

I guess "torched" is the new trendy word, around here.

Zone coverage principles, responsibilities and execution are all focus and effort issues.

Not injury. Not attrition. All on the players and coaches. In the case of this in particular, our 1’s were all on the field in the Secondary. You can’t blame suspension or injury/attrition.

You have to be able to mix coverages. It’s a must. We can’t throw that tool out of the toolkit. This Secondary has multiple coaches and world’s of talent recruited and developed. We are 3 games in and not executing properly.

Luckily we have a relatively easy path to Florida. But yeah...zone coverage execution is cause for concern. You should never panick. But this is a problem.

None of which were in the Secondary which is where folks are focusing criticism. Which is absolutely warranted in context.

Didn’t see much falloff on offense. You?

Means nothing. That won’t beat a single opponent. Earn it every week.

Let me answer your question with a question: Did you notice we went completely away from zone coverage and switched only to man in the second half playing backups most of the 4th Quarter?

The answer to your question and mine are both yes. That you don’t see the issue with the 2nd yes from my question is part of why you’re arguing...and not making sense in the process.

Perfectly normal to do both. You can love this team, enjoy our performance and yet still be objective here and there. You being unable to tolerate anything other than an all or nothing opinion being expressed is pretty weird, though.

The assignments being blown are worrisome to me. There's some youth out there, but there's also some 2 and 3 year starters out there QB'g the defense also.

My take is Aranda is forcing the issue (especially with zone exotics) a little too much and a little too early.

They defense, mentally, isn't where it needs (or should) be.

A&M ranks 37th despite playing at Clemson

UF just upgraded at QB and Mullen has def gotten the better of Aranda the past 2 games

Honestly I'm concerned too. Everyone keeps saying the ones were out and rightfully so you should see a little drop off but this is Northwestern every kid on LSU's roster is better than them. No offense to those players they played a hell of a game. The defense can not play that bad when starters go out. Injuries will occur and back ups will see meaningful snaps. Dont kid yourself if you dont think we have a problem. The Northwestern running back was averaging 5 yards a carry in the first half. Against the talent that's on that d line and linebacking core is sad.

The first half had me a little concerned but the second half the defense played lights out. It was NWS but still, shutting any pass heavy team out for a half is pretty damn good ESPECIALLY when you have an offense that can score like ours.

Tell me that this offense will score like this against every team we play and the defense will shut down every offense we play for half the game and I’ll take that every day all day.

While the team is looking great, and congrats go out to Coach O and the team, I would be more concerned with the lack of a running game. Go Tigers.

Eh..... not really. As much as I hate to say it, Burrow lost that game for us last year with the fumble in the red zone in the first quarter where we could have gone up 14-0 and then the interception at the end. Did the defense look great in that game? No, but they did “enough” that the game was winnable.

Anyone who expects the defense to shut everyone down is setting themselves up for big disappointment. No defense has ever shut everyone down just like no offense hasput up 40+ on everyone they play.
