California passes bill forcing companies to re-classify workers

California gonna California.
California gonna California.

California lawmakers rewrote the rules of employment across a wide swath of industries Wednesday in legislation that could grant hundreds of thousands of workers new job benefits and pay guarantees.

The 6,700-word bill, one of the most controversial of the year, could upend the relationship between workers and bosses across businesses as varied as ride-hailing tech giants, construction, healthcare, trucking, janitorial services, nail salons, adult entertainment, commercial fishing and newspapers. The message of the legislation, said its author, Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez (D-San Diego), is “your business cannot game the system by misclassifying its workers. As lawmakers, we will not in good conscience allow free-riding businesses to continue to pass their own business costs onto taxpayers and workers.
quote:
“Employers shirk responsibility for safety net programs like workers’ compensation and unemployment insurance. Taxpayers are left to foot the bill.” The legislation was pushed by a powerful coalition of labor unions, many of which have suffered stagnating membership as companies classify large chunks of their workforces as independent contractors. Under federal law, only employees can join unions and collectively bargain for wages and benefits.

I suppose, at this point, they're just daring businesses to relocate.

Sooner than later, Cali will be the next Detroit

This is really directed at Uber/Lyft. They will kill rideshare.

Republicans nationwide need to start screaming F*CKING LOUD AND CLEAR that we will not bail out these dip-sh*t states when they go bankrupt!
The writing is on the wall... these states are going to drive companies out, eventually run out of money, go bancrupt... and they are going to want the good taxpayers of Texas, NC, Tenn,... RED STATES to bail them out.
Republicans need to let them know right now that they can get that stupid idea out of their head. I'd rather the country split than pay for the irresponsibility of the corrupt unionized Leftist Democrats.

If these Uber drivers get their way and are allowed to unionize, get minimum wage, etc then the rides will become more expensive and not as many people will use Uber anymore. Less money for the drivers.

This is all you need to know.

It sounds like the bill basically forces corporations to classify those 1099 independent contractors that they dictate rules of engagement to as they would to a W2 worker to actually classify them as a W2. Which may be one of the few good ideas Commiefornia has had.

I'm not sure that this is going to work. The employee versus independent contractor issue is a matter of IRS regulations and caselaw based on the internal revenue code. How someone is classified for tax purposes is strictly a matter of federal law.

I hope all that libtard trash out there enjoy their $200 uber rides across town.

Once again, California lawmakers trying to empty the place.
Look out, Texas.
Look out, Texas.

Would be awesome if Uber and Lyft pull up stakes and give the middle finger to Cali.

I would like my employer to classify me as an independent contractor, then they couldn't prevent me from consulting with other companies on the side. I could double my pay within a month.
