In a first for astronomers studying worlds beyond our solar system, data from the Hubble Space Telescope have revealed water vapor in the atmosphere of an Earth-size planet. Although this exoplanet orbits a star that is smaller than our sun, it falls within what’s known as the star’s habitable zone, the range of orbital distances where it would be warm enough for liquid water to exist on a planet’s surface.

The discovery, announced this week in two independent studies, comes from years of observations of the exoplanet K2-18b, a super-Earth that’s about 111 light-years from our solar system. Discovered in 2015 by NASA’s Kepler spacecraft, K2-18b is very unlike our home world: It’s more than eight times the mass of Earth, which means it’s either an icy giant like Neptune or a rocky world with a thick, hydrogen-rich atmosphere.

Now that Planet Wakanda has found out that we're onto them, they’ll take preemptive measures to make sure we don’t wreck their shite like we’re doing here on Earth.

tl/dr: We ain’t got 10 years.

I’ve often wondered what affect on society it would have if we found proof, not just evidence, but proof of alien life.

Thoughts?

Very interesting discovery, but at 8x Earth’s mass, that atmosphere is going to be thicker than Venus’.

Meh, aliens probably put a giant mirror at the end of the universe and astronomers are just seeing Earth’s reflection from a kagillion zillion light years away.

Space is amazing. And I believe there has to be life out there just based on the sheer size. But being light years away...we may never know.

This whole excerpt struck me funny.

The begin by saying, "Hey, it probably has water and is pretty similar to Earth."

Then at the end, they say "Naw, man. frick that. It's just a giant block of ice or rock."
