full disclosure. I'm squarely in the millennial demographic and am guilty of many of the things I loathe about cell phones.

but every part of our lives has been consumed by these things:

driving
hunting/fishing
concerts
meals (esp. restaurants)
etc.

the internet can be a great resource, but once we had that power at our fingertips, it has been all consuming.

So many people will miss life living vicariously through these things.

I get the irony/hypocrisy posting this from a cell phone, but I feel at least some validation in the fact that I acknowledge the problem. It has become socially acceptable to have this device in your hand and essentially ignoring the person you are in the same room with.

sad really....

Growing up in the 70s and 80s I can tell you for sure it has killed spontaneity.

Home already. But agreed. DWIs are another vastly overlooked and acceptable thing apparently.

Good. There’s not a single person I want dropping in unannounced like what seemed to be common as a kid.

you sound fun. but the people that didn't call before cell phones are the same ones that won't text, email or give any kinds of heads up.

But sometimes a surprise visit is nice. Not everything needs to be discussed, scheduled or known ahead of time.

But don't worry, even if the visit is ill timed, they'll be ignoring you in 5 min. telling the world where they are and "how much fun we're having" on Instagram, snapchat and Facebook.

I don't know about that. I miss the visit from friends who aren't the closest, but still took the time to come visit. Looking back, they might've been unannounced, but not unexpected. We had the same people that would show up at about the same time every week or every other week, whatever their schedule was. We didn't have the communication we have today and people used to actually go and spend time with their friends and have a cup of coffee, a piece of cake, lunch, etc., and they'd make the rounds every so often just to keep in touch with each other.

Paradoxically, the technology that allows us to be connected 24/7 has made us less social. We communicate often in short bursts, saying nothing of substance to each other, instead of spending an hour or so together less frequently and enjoying company and old fashioned conversation.

Some people like surprise visits. Many people don’t. It takes all types, my friend.

My parents have finally started to learn after driving 30+ minutes to my house or my brothers house and us not being there. Or it being 9am on a Saturday morning and brother’s in bed still asleep/hungover with a bong sitting on the coffee table In my case, just a super messy “had people over til 3am” house.

Someone showing up to my house unannounced after a night of having people over late and the house being an explosion sounds like a nightmare.

But you had a phone back then, right? I think his point is that there isn't anything stopping a person from dropping in unannounced today that wouldn't have stopped them in 1989.

Right. Exactly. Spontaneous drop-ins are no longer the norm even if nothing is stopping it from being possible to do.

I was saying I’m glad. It’s a thread about ruining humanity. In that regard, I’m glad that particular thing is ruined because it sounds like a nightmare to me. Different people like different things.

Probably due to all the agoraphobics sitting around on their phones.

I'm guilty too (doing it right now ), and of course different people like different things, but I don't think it's a positive development for society.

I miss getting lost in a new city and having to buy a city map at a gas station.

But the thing is, I still don't know where I am with google maps. With a real map I can see to whole area and get the lay of the land.

I was mostly making a joke about not wanting anyone sniffing around my driveway without me knowing.

GET OFF MY LAWN

I do agree with OP about people’s need to capture every single moment and not living in the moment. Anytime there’s something cool going on, all you see are phones videoing it in the hands of everyone around.

It's pretty easy. Turn off all of the alerts that aren't really important. Get rid of the badge icons that tell you how many messages from your shitty friends or stressful relatives are waiting on facebook. Put that shite in your pocket and make a conscious decision that you will live your life outside of the phone.

Also, this isn't just millennials. I was at the Rolling Stones concert in NOLA last month and there were tons of old boomer types watching the entire concert on their phone screen. It was pathetic really.
I even saw one trying to Shazaam a Rolling Stones song live. It was some kind of really common, well known track like Brown Sugar or something... and he kept repeatedly trying to Shazaam it.

I was on LSU’s campus recently for something and I noticed as the students were walking out of class at the Cox building that 9 out of 10 people were walking while reading something on their phone. I mean... I do it too all the time, but it’s weird when you arent on your phone while people watching and noticing that.

Imagine what a young child thinks when they just watch adults walk around staring at a piece of aluminum/metal (cell phone). I miss the days where people looked up when they walked...
