New users can get a lifetime membership using code PLEXFORLIFE.

I wasn't able to find out when the discount expires.

That very much depends on what features you use. The free version of Plex is a pretty useful media server without the pay features. I'd probably only get the paid version of Plex if I cut the cord completely and wanted a DVR for OTA channels.

Basically you can store all of your media, movies and music, on a computer and the plex software sets the computer up like a server so you can stream off of it to any device you choose. It categorizes and sorts it to make it all easy to find.

In my case, I have a laptop that sits in my entertainment center that has all of my movies and music. When the kids want to watch toy story, instead of using the computer, we just turn on a tv with a firestick or Apple TV and stream it. I also use plex to stream music to my speakers outside to play music without burning up my phone battery.

You can also set it up with an antenna to watch OTA channels on different TVs.

Its nice if you have a data cap on your internet because if you're on your home network, you aren't downloading anything. It also works on your home network if your internet goes out.

So if you have say a synolgy NAS do you run plex on that (not sure if they do that) or you still need a computer interface? Something I been wanting to do but have not started the research on it all.

It can be installed on a NAS but the quality and quantity of streams will depend on the processor. Plex has a compatibility and capability list on their site.

Thanks!

So you could run it on a NAS but could run it on a computer that is just attached to the NAS if it wasn’t able to run well directly on the NAS?

Yes, you can set it up on a computer and only use the NAS as your media storage device.

I was using our gaming PC to host Plex but ran into issues streaming when someone was playing on the computer.

I was looking for a decent NAS to use but ended up building a $500 PC that is dedicated to Plex.

To add to the above posts- Plex also provides a great aggregate of media info and puts that in a pretty good interface. You add your media file to it and it finds everything about it - things like release year, artist/actors, genre, cover artwork, etc. Then you can search through your media with a layout similar to Netflix, or pick an actor and see a list of all of their movies, or a whole host of other features.

If you have a large media library then it’s a must purchase.

I have a WD cloud nas currently with my music on it...it consists of ripped music from my cd’s, and other people’s files from a while back. It’s around 200 gigs because at some point it got combined with a duplicate file. So a lot of the “cd’s” have 2 of every song. Could plex help unfrick that without going to every single file?!?

Same thing applies to any pc you run Plex on if you're transcoding anything. I ran it for years on a spare desktop and it would run reasonably well. Just picked up a synology DS1019+ and it just flat out rocks on it. I can have six or seven different transcodes running 1080p or a couple in 4k.

It won’t delete those files if that’s what you’re asking. But I’m pretty sure it looks for duplicates and just doesn’t display them both. I could be wrong though.

I dont need it to do the deleting but if there was a way to split it...or group it so I could select all and delete. I may grab it at 75/life and take a look because its a huge PITA task to clean up that file...and spotify has a good enough playlist

Are they exact duplicates, as in copies with maybe (1) added to the filename? Or are they possibly from a totally different rip with different settings and such?

I'm not sure if I need the pass. What are the major differences?

For me, the major benefits of Plex Pass are Live TV and mobile sync.

Some may be duplicates from a different rip, but most are an exact copy, but idk if it has the (1) or not. I put all this on a external HD about 10 years ago, used it some, and then got a pandora log in and forgot about it for the next 9 years I just got this WD Cloud HD and it reminded me of the duplicates when it loaded up 200 gigs of music when I thought it should be 70-100. I'll just have to look at it on the file level and see whats up when I stream it through Sonos I just see the song listed 2 times.

now you done triggered this board!

nolagt - plex handles duplicate movies very elegantly. you see a tiny [2] in the upper right corner and you can pick your version. i sometimes had 2-3 or more versions of a movie on my server as i was working through various copies in order to figure out which one was the best (1080p rip vs 1080p web download vs 4K rip vs 4K HDR rip vs 4K HDR web download...). it gets a little overwhelming in the search for the best quality. this is why some people prefer to grab the bluray image and do it themselves.

kork is running mr. robot which routinely sniffs around through his media collection and automatically upgrades any that are "unfit". WHAT?? I still have some 720p rips??

With no data cap and a little elbow grease, having a bot update your existing copies and also sniff out this week's new tv episode is probably as awesome as having plex setup in the first place. *cough* radarr *cough* sonarr

anyway, i digress. agree with kork: best thing about plexpass is you are setup for the zombie apocalypse in that you can control your own TV DVR and with a decent antenna you'll be enjoying better quality HD than you can get through cable tv.
