My son just turned 16 a couple of months ago. We did not buy him a car, but we have a 3rd vehicle that he drives right now. We will eventually buy him one, but not the one he wants. He want a Jeep Wrangler and I already got a quote for insurance on one...and nope. There are 3 rules for him to have his own vehicle.

1. Absolutely no alcohol in it at any time.
2. He has to work for gas money.
3. He has to keep his grades up.

I plan on doing the same thing my parents did for me. My son won't have to pay for a car or insurance until he graduates. He will also drive beaters until that day happens.

I paid the down payment on mine which was somewhere around half. My parents picked up the payments. That will probably be the route we take.

I paid my mom $250/month to help with the note and insurance (came out to around half), and I paid for gas, inspections, and most maintenance. This was my choiceI'll probably have a similar setup for my kids, amount TBD.

Not something I plan on doing. I had to work in high school and 2 jobs in college. I busted my arse so that my daughter doesn’t have to do what I did. I’ll have her pay for her own gas but I’m not gonna have a note on a 16 year olds vehicle. We’ll either buy in cash or give them hand me downs.

I bought my first car, and my parents paid for the insurance and gas. Hopefully, I will be able to pay for it all for my 2 boys when they are old enough to drive

I had to buy my first truck and every one after that. A 2003 Ford Ranger Edge (bought in 2005)

Parents paid my insurance. I paid the fuel and all.

I was given my first car because I had good grades. They spent $500 in the mid 90s. It didn't even have ac or heat.

I'll prob give my kids a little better as long as they have good grades etc.

No. My kids were so busy, there was no way their mother and I could keep up with their schedules and full time jobs. It was a necessity for us.

No, but make sure they understand how much of a privilege it is to not have to pay for a car and have a car payment.

Its okay to financially support your children more than you had. The problem is when they dont understand that its not the norm and that they better appreciate it.

I inherited mine from my grandmother. Parents paid for insurance as long as I made grades. My kids will get a similar deal.

I’ll do what my parents did. I only paid for my gas during the summer while working.

I bought both kids their first car. Not new, but something practical with low miles and something they were happy with. They paid for gas in high school and gas/insurance/minor upkeep items in college. They knew it would be their trade in after college so they took pretty good care of them.
Fortunately, they had no big maintenance issues and it worked out okay for both.

i bought their cars, but had them in my name, and I told them that they were to care for them, as if they were borrowing my cars.

Yes. But they will have to have and hold a job for six months before I buy it. Then they must pay gas and insurance. That's the plan for now at least but that is a long ways away lol

Lots of parents who spoil their kids in this thread, jeez

My parents let me and my siblings know early on they would not be buying us our cars when we turned 16(even though my parents easily could have). They kept telling us when we turned 14 or so, you better start looking for a job so you can buy a car when you are 16.

I started umpiring T-Ball and Coach Pitch when I was 14 and did that for a few seasons. Got my first job at 15 years old working the parking lot at Six Flags as well as at a minor league baseball stadium. Mowed lawns. Saved up about $3000 and bought my first car when I turned 16 with no help from my parents.
