Strief: Saints "hit the lottery" with rookie receiver Butler

It’s no secret, at least to those following Saints training camp, that the Black and Gold may have found a true diamond in the rough in undrafted rookie receiver Emmanuel Butler. The Northern Arizona product slipped below the radar thanks in part to a truncated senior season. Butler played just two games before suffering a shoulder injury. But Butler has been turning heads in New Orleans during his first NFL training camp, and the voice of the Saints Zach Strief says the team believes he could be a star in the making. “I think they’re extremely high on Emmanuel Butler,” Strief said. “I think they feel really, really good about that guy. I think he’s a player. He’s a guy I think you turn around in three or four years and just be like, I can’t believe we got that guy undrafted. We stole him.” Strief went on to say Butler "is that kind of, once every eight years you hit the lottery. I think he's that kind of guy as an undrafted free agent." Butler had been sidelined recently after suffering what’s believed to be a leg injury in practice but was out on the field running today. His status for this Friday’s preseason contest against the Minnesota Vikings remains up in the air. Strief made the comments during an appearance on WWL Radio's Sports Talk on Wednesday afternoon. The Saints play host to the Vikings in preseason action Friday night at 7. Our wall-to-wall coverage on WWL 870 AM and 105.3 FM starts that afternoon at 3pm.

I hope this kid turns out like they said but let's pump the breaks a little. Hasn't even played in a preseason game

I'll feel better when he starts practicing again.

He was at practice running today.

While I don't disagree, that the praise is coming from Strief and not just some fan or beat writer gives it a little more credibility. It's not as if Strief is so far removed from his playing days that he can't recognize a good player when he sees one. Plus, one would have to think he's still very much tied in several of the current players and coaches, particularly Brees, Payton, and much of the offensive staff. I suspect his opinion is not simply based on his own observations, but what his former teammates and coaches are saying "off the record"

Guys like this make it possible to slightly overpay your veterans like MT. That’s why you have to develop your team through the draft and not FA.

what's good about him? route running, hands, speed, toughness, combo of these?

He played in 45 games and had 187 catches for 3,217 yards, 33 Tds, and a 17.2 yard average per catch

If he has 2 of those things, it's already a win for an UDFA.

Wonder if Deke is still in rehab?

Won’t take much to overtake Smith and Carr. Hell he might carve out a decent role for himself if he can actually play on Sundays the way he practices. Every year there’s practice warriors that disappear on game day though
Let’s pump the breaks on him being the next great UDFA Saint

When you use "breaks" instead of "brakes" you lose all credibility with me

Actually it will according to the Saints. They stood pat in FA and the draft for a new #2 and a 3rd rec because they like Smith and Kirkwood even if some fans think little of those two.

It would be very impressive if he overtakes Tre'Quan this year. Even Kirkwood as well.
Carr is on the roster bubble...along with Butler, Rishard Matthews, Simmie Cobbs, & Cyril Grayson (at this point...he has a better chance to make the team over Lil'Jordan imo). I'm rooting for Travin Dural, but he's probably fighting for a spot on the PS.
I agree that it wouldn't take much for Butler to overtake Carr though...Tre'Quan & Kirkwood both did that last year as rookies.
I'm not saying Carr can't make the team, but he'll have to improve the separation that he creates when running his routes. That's really his only noticeable big weakness, but it really affects him. He can block, runs good routes, & has good hands...so it's not like he doesn't have a chance.

I don't see a problem with it. It makes it fun. Sometimes the guy works out, & usually the guy doesn't. It is what it is.
We've been good at finding these guys at WR under CSP...during times when we're forced rebuild the WR position.
Colston - 7th round
Lance Moore - udfa
Kenny Stills - 5th round
Brandon Coleman - udfa
Willie Snead - udfa
Keith Kirkwood - udfa
