This has been bugging me because I am not quite sure what I should do. Need the OB’s advice.

I drive my wife’s old Jeep Grand Cherokee to and from work to save mileage on my new truck. Problem is the automatic driver side window is broken. I had it looked at and was quoted $500 so I said no thanks.

Let’s say I am pulled over by a cop. I need to hand them my CCL, Driver’s license, and insurance. Let’s say there is not a gun in the vehicle which I need to verbally tell the police offer while handing him my info. Do I open the door up? Do I lower the rear driver side window and tell them my driver window is broken?

I understand profiling is important for cops to be alert and save. I am ok with that. I am worried because it is an older vehicle, I am a bigger guy with a beard, and I mostly drive in the early AM when it is still dark outside. A female cop might be on high alert.

So how do I go about giving the cop my info in the safest manner?

Turn on your interior light, put your hands on the steering wheel and sit there. Wait until they get to the window. Yell “the window is broken, is it cool if I open the door?” Do what they say.

Depending on who pulls you over(SO, PD, State), they may have you exit the vehicle via loudspeaker. If possible, let them know ASAP that the driver's window won't go down. Don't make any stupid moves and you'll be OK.

FWIW, I retired in 2012 from law enforcement and that would be my advice.

Why are you handing over your carry permit and telling them there isn't a gun when you don't have one?

And fix your window. It's not hard

Roll down the driver side rear window, inform them of the problem and if you have a gun or not ... If you stay cool and calm, so will the cop. In experience , they will tell you to crack the door or even open if they feel there is no threat .

Ok...I'm confused.

I thought no matter whether you're carrying or not you're obligated by law to show the officer your CC permit when you hand over your license and registration/proof of insurance.

If this is not true, someone needs to educate the officers of the town of Georgetown, La. I got caught in their little speedtrap of a city and did what I thought I had to do (show my CC permit)...

Apparently he didn't know what it was at first so I told him and I said I wanted to make sure I gave that to you...he responded, "It's a good thing you did, because it's the law".

I did have my weapon in the truck but he never asked for it or anything.

So is it required BY LAW to submit your paperwork carrying or not?

I don't have a problem giving it up...I just want to know if that redneck city cop knows the law or not.

If it is a busy highway they approach from the passenger side. It is safer. Plenty of HP officers have been hit by a car and died when approaching from the Driver's side. I'm sure the number has increased because of texting and driving. This is my experience last couple of years.

If you can buy a new truck you can afford to get your window fixed. buy natty ice for a few weekends instead of hipster IPAs

Maybe I'm wrong here but don't cops usually just ask about weapons anyway? Leave your hands on the steering wheel and tell the cop there is a weapon and where it is. Doesn't matter if you have a CCP or not. At least that's what I'm doing.

tell them you don't answer questions and ask if you are being detained followed by a lot of cursing. Make sure to record it.

Interior light on. Hands on steering wheel so they can see them. Tell them if you are armed. Tell them window is broken and how do they want to proceed.

Do as you are told. No sudden movements.

On another note. Look at 1aauto.com for your window regulator. They even have how to install videos for many of their parts. When I did mine the original was riveted in so I had to drill out one side of the rivet and replace it with bolts(furnished with regulator). You should buy a door trim tool before starting and it will keep you from breaking the push clips.

Its not hard, took about 45 minutes but could do in 20 next time, now that I know what to do.

I'm surprised this thread has gone on this long. Lots of different opinions here, and and that's what the vast majority of the info is .....opinions. One thing that should not be subject to opinion: do whatever is legal and required by the laws of the state you're traveling in. Having said that, here're my opinons. This is what I personally do and have recommended to others, including my adult children:
1. Kill engine.
2 Turn on inside light if at night.
3. Roll down window (except for you).
4. Get concealed card and driver's license from wallet and hold them in your hands.
5. Get insurance card and registration info from glove box (some say don't do this while the LEO is in his car as you don't want it to look like your getting a weapon; I think he'll be at ease if you get the info while he's in his car running your plates since your next step is going to be...
6. Put both hands on the top of the steering wheel.
7. Give the LEO your driver's license and cc license when he walks up to the driver's side window. I don't say things like: "I've got a gun," "I've got a weapon," or "I'm armed." That's always sounded to me like it could potentially intimidate some LEO.
8. Follow his instructions.

Since you can't follow step #2 (at least yet, until you repair the window ) I would instead hold up your DL and CC id card to the driver's side window, look him in the eyes and tell him, "My window is broken. What do you want me to do?" I do not inform LEO of any weapons in my car if it's not concealed on my person, unless he asks.

Not all states require the driver to notify the LEO of his concealed gun. LA does. When traveling outside LA,, I always tell the LEO so I don't have to remember the different laws of every different state. A friend's' personal experience a few months ago w/ a TX LEO officer, suggests the LA concealed carry data base is shared w/ TX.
