and may not bode well for Ursula the Sea Witch.

An interesting article about how remaking Jafar and Scar less broad and less effeminate diluted the characters. I think with Scar it was more of moving from upperclass British to a more street version.

I’m guessing that the author would think that the George Sanders Shere Kahn was queer coded. And I know making LeFou gay was a big mistake.

Queer-coding may have been wrong, but the result was a roster full of scene-stealing characters that young viewers could interpret as LGBTQ.

I don’t think I’ve ever heard of LogoTV.com.

Where do y’all find some of this stuff?

I swear, for a group of people whose base platform is that they aren’t defined solely by their sexuality, they have proven to be... well, let’s just say their trumpet only blows one note.

You must not have cable.

The guy is right about one thing, making these characters less theatrical and less Shakespearean in order to make sure that they won’t be mistaken for gay villains does make them bland.

They are just making these movies about themselves

I do. If it’s one of those random channels in some package somewhere I’ve just not heard of it.

Jafar sucked because the guy’s voice wasn’t villain-like in any way.

I think the problem in all of the cases is they forced the look over the demeanor and voice in these live action versions of the films.

Jafar’s looks and voice made him such a great character.

This is so psychotic. These villains are over the top theatrical. Not gay. It's not our fault most gays are over the top crying for attention. You don't have to ruin theater because of it.

Not as dumb as the movie proving Scar had a son.

Well, Scar was the male lion of the pride the whole time between Mufasa's death and Simba returning fully grown. He'd have been hitting all the female lions regularly.

This is not psychotic. This idea of gay-coding villains has been around since the silent era. It doesn't mean that Scar is gay or that Jafar is gay. Both Scar and Jafar have been given effeminate voices and traits to "other" them. It makes them stand in contrast to the more traditionally masculine protagonists.

The article quoted is stupid. The villains aren't bland because they aren't gay-coded; they are bland because Disney made mediocre movies relying on your knowledge the villains instead of attempting to make them interesting.

I agree. I was trying to say Lion King 2 sucked balls.

I never once thought of Scar as gay or effeminate. Was he supposed to be?

Yeah. I agree. Effeminate voices and slender builds are not the sole domain of gays. It's a theater tactic used to contrast the typical strong masculine character. Sexual orientation has nothing to do with it.

I'm so tired of perpetual victim groups seeing victim hood everywhere. Gays claim they are no different from anyone else. Then they simultaneously claim that because scar was slightly effeminate he must be gay and that's an insult. So which is it? Are they just like everyone else or are they ultra sensitive effeminate cry babies?

Lion King 2 wasn’t great, but Zira was a pretty damn good villain for a direct to video sequel. RIP Suzanne Pleshette.

Having Scar’s widow be the antagonist was a pretty cool plot device.

I never got the impression that Ursula was gay. Pat Carroll stated in an interview that she viewed the character as a combination of a used car salesman and an over the top Shakespearean actor.
