Not my favorite Kubrick picture... personally favor Dr. Strangelove, first half of Barry Lyndon, and maybe even A Clockwork Orange more, but 2001 is 2001: perhaps the greatest cinematic achievement ever.

Here's how this thread is gonna go: Someone's gonna say its boring. Then someone is gonna respond and tell that person to stick to Transformers and Marvel. Then the first person is gonna say he understands it but its just boring. Then someone else is gonna say Insterstellar was better.

The first part of FMJ, maybe. The Vietnam part sucks.

There it is. Always one of the first responses when someone mentions FMJ.

I think the majority of people that were kids/weren't born yet when this movie came out just say that this movie is a masterpiece because they believe that they are supposed to think that.

I liked the one where they go to Petra and dig up the old prime robot.

While I love Kubrick films, this one is my least favorite. I’m a Paths Of Glory man myself.

I have tried multiple times to get through 2001 and I just never could. I powered through overlong epics such as Lawrence of Arabia, Ben-Hur, and Gone With the Wind, but never have I been able to successfully watch all of 2001: A Space Odyessy.

Completely agree with this. The first part makes the film a classic but the second part wasn't that bad.

I saw it as a kid when it was first released. There was a companion large format booklet that you could buy at the theater with photos from the film. Of course I didn't understand most of it, but it was an amazing experience that I'll never forget.

If you think that it's less than a masterpiece then you have no clue about the film and the time of it's release. We were a c*nt hair away from putting a man on the moon and this was the first realistic look at our possible future in space. The practical and special effects were a leap forward that was greater than that of Jurassic Park's dinosaurs and the introduction of Gollum.

To be honest, I didn't appreciate it fully until I read Clarke's book that he wrote while filming was underway. And his sequels just made the film an even better watch.

I understand that the pacing is slow for today's audiences, but people really come across as idiots when they dismiss it as "boring".

I thought the book was decent. Would like to read the sequels, but the movie is fricking boring.

NASA was involved in the production because Kubrick sold it to them as pro space exploration propaganda piece. They were a bit upset when they saw the final result.

It's basically a mind-fricking, acid trippy evolution of mankind movie through extraterrestrial/celestial interference.

In a way, I guess it could be construed as the most pro "intelligent design" picture ever made. That's probably why the Vatican praised it so much when it came out and even showed it there for the Pope I believe.
