Old Wives' Tales and Black Bay's Real Name
Posted on 7/23/19 at 11:24 am

I've heard constantly over the years that Black Bay in Plaquemines Parish had a rather naughty name beginning with an "N" years before it was replaced with something not so naughty. lol
This always made sense to me, but I loooooove doing research on stuff and -- years later -- was looking at old maps (studying coastal land loss, me thinks) and noticed the controversial name was never on the map.
Not once.
So, I think the whole "it used to be called this name, betcha didn't know that, hardy har har" is just a dumb redneck/coonass thing that isn't anything more than an old wive's tale.
This map from 1941 doesn't have anything other than "Black Bay" on it.
LINK
Here's a map from 1893 clearly stating the body of water as being "Black Bay".
LINK
Those are pretty old maps, right?
People claiming otherwise always mention that they've seen an "old map" bearing the name, or have one, but not once have they ever produced a picture of the thing.
We have pictures of Bigfoot, but not one of this map?
I think people claiming so are full of shite and need to pony up or ditch the lame joke.
Change my mind! lol

It was referred to as "N" Lake
You can Google it and see several references.

And it's very derogatory and offensive to some
people. We didn't realize, I didn't realize it, but it used to be "N" Lake. It was even on a map. You look at the old
maps, you'll find that. * * * * they called it. They call it Black Bay now, cus it was offensive to black people.
You know, but in those years, you have to think back in those days, they just used the N word in general. But there's
another story that comes up about that too. You know I didn't know any better, I was a child.
Please dont ban me

That link to LDWF is interesting LOL
But there is still no map.
It's nothing new that locals had their own name for it, but there's still no map.
Hell, we called Lake Coquille "Schwarzenegger Pond", and Bay Eloi was really "Get to the Choppa Lake" but it's not on a map.

I have seen a map with it on there, and I believe fish has a map with it printed
Eta: I believe the one I saw was a LDWF map from the 80s

Look, I'll eat my hat if someone produces it and proves me wrong.
No problem there, but just because some downaroad white booter "said so" doesn't mean squat, at least not to me.
If not, then I have beach front property in Arizona to sell you.
I want to see that dang map!!! lol

Will dig it out later today if I can find the time.
If I remember right, it was printed in 1946.

Oh it is on maps.
I have a very old map at my camp in Delcroix that has the name on it.
I will take a picture of it next time I am there and post back to this thread.

I would say so.
OP sounds like he wants visual proof though.

I don't think anyone thinks it's a lame joke. I think it's just a part of history.
The map I have is black and white.
It's falling apart.
I have never felt the need to take a picture of the words "N****r Lake".
The only time we take it out is to put it next to a new map to show the land loss.

I had an old fold up map that had the "N" name on it. I think it was made by someone in St. Bernard if memory serves me correctly.

Good Afternoon everyone. I’m new to the board and this post caught my attention. Always remember the old timers around Delacroix refer to Black Bay as the different name. It is in fact on the map. We had one years ago that was lost in Katrina. However it is on the map hanging at Serigne’s boat launch. Next person that way can take a pick if that’s what you are looking for. Thanks! I enjoy the board!

Found a copy of the map. Trying to figure out how to post it. Again, I’m new here!
