Waste of time and money or is it a fun little hobby?

uncle used to back in the 90s. it was 99.99% junk. think about what a storage unit is for people...

Not important/valuable enough to be in

1. house
2. garage
3. attic

So it goes out of sight, in another location, usually without any form of climate control. Its basically a junk drawer.

Most of the times it is junk. If people have good things they usually sell or pawn them before it is seized. Every now and then you may find something really good. I have 28 years of experience in renting them and usually just junking people’s crap.

I watch the local ones that get advertised online, and go when I see items with value most people overlook. I have gotten some great toys for pennies on the dollar.

If the unit doesn't have tools or good furniture in it, it will go pretty cheap. I bought a unit last year that had a collection of mid 2000s star wars and gi joe stuff including a lot of convention exclusives and limited release items for the opening bid $500, and sold the contents for close to $10 grand.

If you don’t think the owners of the storage unit open them up before the auction you are sadly mistaken
