I’ll admit that I’m likely the only American alive that doesn’t keep up with Disney movies or the songs. I’m seeing a lot of memes as if it’s some sort of, controversy?

Were there actually folks that had a problem with it? Or is this some sort of manufactured straw man so that dumb people can continue to be mad about racist that don’t really exist?

The timing seems awfully suspicious, seriously asking.

Casting a black girl to play a character who was originally white is raycis.

Why is there no push for a Hispanic mermaid?

or an Asian mermaid?

or a Native American mermaid?

just curious why the pandering is always so narrowly focused?

Well there is no way a mermaid would be black so I understand the outrage.

Surprised they didn't pick a mixed race transgender for the part.

There's at least 2 of us. Look at that, we just doubled in number. Our group is growing fast.

I don't think the average Disney fan has a problem with casting black actors, generally.

Let's take a step back further - the James Bond issue. They floated that the next Bond was going to be Idris Elba. No one disputes that Elba is a great actor and might make a great James Bond. But the race shift would be jarring, visually and just not in keeping with the expectations of the character.

Likewise, the girl who is cast for Ariel in the live action may do a fine job. These are fictional characters, after all, but there either is such a thing as whiteface/blackface (fill in the blanks) and cultural appropriation or there isn't.

If there isn't, then let's shut up about it and enjoy Dr. King's dream. But if there is, and it only works one way (or more specifically, it only works against 1 race and 1 gender), then "frick all that" when they do stunt casting.

I'd be concerned she might drown.

I'm horrified by their lack of compassion for our mixed race transgendered allies.

Now that’s good, so it can’t be racist, if we are concerned about her well being

Ariel is a fictional character made up by Disney. If they want to cast a person that doesn’t fit the red haired white girl that they created, then so be it.

The movie “Annie” that came out a couple of years ago cast a black girl in that role as well. I guess they have something against gingers.

With that said, i am looking forward to when they cast Adam Sandler as the fictional “Black Panther”. (Never will happen)

To this day, I have never seen The Little Mermaid. I was grown when it came out and had no kids, so I have no expectations.

But it's not one part or one movie. This is every movie and every TV show now.

Remember when Kal Pen and his circle of Obama admin dems were caught planning to put "the message" into everything they could? This seems to be the result. It's ceaseless.
