The archduke was traveling to Sarajevo in Bosnia (then a vassal state of the Austro-Hungarian Empire) to watch military maneuvers.

Gavrilo Princip and a band of Serbian nationalists traveled over to the city with the sole intent to assassinate Franz Ferdinand.

Much like the JFK assassination, the route of the motorcade was published beforehand and they were traveling in an open car.

At first attempt, the would-be assassins failed to succeed and only succeeded in harming some civilians with a bomb. The Archduke fled to the governor’s mansion to give him a piece of his mind. After this, the archduke left the mansion. While traveling through Sarajevo, his driver took a wrong turn, and had to turn around. As fate would have it, the car stalled in front of a little cafe which at the time, Gavrilo Princip was eating.

Princip seized his opportunity, walked up to the car and shot the Austrian archduke in the neck and shot his wife, Sofie as well. Both died in that car.

The importance of this act need not be explained to a lot on this board, but it was the spark that lit the inferno known as the First World War.

Gavrilo Princip was 19 years old when he did this.

So a fricking teenager started a World War.

And caused wwii and a bunch of other instability issues, such as the fall of the ottomans, the rise of communism, etc.

Nowadays we’ve got 19 year olds complaining about the patriarchy and other dumb shite. Back in those days, 19 year olds were changing the course of human history!

Possibly, but I think Russia is mainly to blame for the affair spiraling like it did.

Town hall not governor's mansion. The mayor was giving a speech and Ferdinand interrupted him by saying "Mr. Mayor, I came here on a visit and I am greeted with bombs. It is outrageous." He was pissed.

quote:

While traveling through Sarajevo, his driver took a wrong turn, and had to turn around

General's had decided to switch things up and send the archduke and his wife to the hospital to visit those injured by the bomb. They decided that they would take a different route along the Appel Quay in order to avoid the busy center of town, which was the way they came in. Nobody relayed that info to the driver, so he went the same way they had come in on. When the driver turned off of the Appel Quay, Governor Potiorek, who was riding with the archduke, told them to stop because they were going the wrong way. The car did not have a reverse gear so they had to get out and push it. This just happened to be right in front of Schiller's delicatessen where Princip just so happened to be.

quote:

Both died in that car

After the shooting, they were both taken to the governor's mansion for medical treatment. She died on the way there, and he died about 10 minutes after they arrived. His last words were "Sophie, Sophie! Don't die! Live for our children!" Then mumbled "It is nothing" (speaking about his wounds) a few times.

His wife was a commoner and the Austrian royal family always treated her like shite. One reason they liked traveling was that they could appear in public together, which they weren't able to in Vienna due to royal protocol.

Interesting side note, Franz Ferdinand nearly lost his life in a hunting accident in England the previous year.

quote:

The Archduke and his wife visited England in the autumn of 1913, spending a week with George V and Queen Mary at Windsor Castle before going to stay for another week with the Duke of Portland at Welbeck Abbey, Nottinghamshire, where they arrived on 22 November. He attended a service at the local Catholic church in Worksop and the Duke and Archduke went game shooting on the Welbeck estate when, according to the Duke's memoirs, Men, Women and Things:

One of the loaders fell down. This caused both barrels of the gun he was carrying to be discharged, the shot passing within a few feet of the archduke and myself. I have often wondered whether the Great War might not have been averted, or at least postponed, had the archduke met his death there and not in Sarajevo the following year.[10]

And that was why they did it. The official history is bullshite. No one with more than three brain cells would think that killing the arch duke would make the Austrians leave them alone. Quite the opposite.

They got a 19-year-old drug addict to start the "global crisis" that they deemed necessary to transform the world. Fortunately for humanity, it only partially worked.
