As much as the fiscal part of me wants the assets...
Sports arent strictly fiscal
Jrue has qualities that are exceptionally rare in the NBA
He can teach your youngins things that coaches cant and impart wisdom life cant
In sports not everything revolves around assets or prospects

There’s no need to trade him now, but I do think it is something you have to think long and hard about next season.
Jrue is 29 years old. By any honest metric he is not on this team’s long term time schedule. When Zion hits his prime Jrue will be on the cusp of retirement or only a few seasons out.
But as is he has all the qualities you want in a veteran to show our young guys like Zion the ropes the right way. But I do think you have to consider what he could fetch next season. In what will be a paltry FA class and teams looking to add a proven veteran to get them over the jump into serious contender.

I'd make inquiries at the deadline
Some team might get desperate now that the west is wide open

Because you need a team leader and he’s also a lock down defender. He’s part of Zion’s growth.

If you draft Culver and he turns out to be a good SG then obviously you consider it next year or year after depending on the haul.
But teams full of a rookies have a tendency to never get good. Ever.
You need a mix of high quality vets, young potential guys, rookies, future draft picks to build a successful roster. You want guys of various levels of progression and contracts.
Having 5 rookies on a team is insanely stupid.

This is one of the many reasons the Suns haven’t made the playoffs since Nixon was in the White House
You need vet leadership and you need FO leadership. You can’t just add top 5 pick after top 5 pick

Yeah, this doesn't work.

Im not saying you don’t have vets on the team to lead the young guys, but people need to be realistic.
Jrue has three years left on his contract. He will be going on 32 at that point.
The Pels will likely be caught in a situation where Jrue wants to cash out one last time.
If you are Griffin, are you wanting to pay 20 - 30 million a year for 4 years to a guy that will be on the decline and likely an anchor come the second half of his next contract? As Zion is going into his prime? Who might even demand a max otherwise he will go to a ready made contender?
These are the realities of having a guy that is not on our time schedule. As the other option is you play out his contract and risk letting him walk.
Now if I’m a GM and have the fortune of thinking long-term, I don’t know how you convince me that Jrue does not need to be shopped in the 2021 season barring us on a championship trajectory.

Zion will be the face of the franchise but Jrue will be our leader

quote:Vets who play for the vet minimum are either career bench guys who were never major contributors (and rookies won’t really look up to or take seriously) or they’re at the end of their career and ring chasing (which means they aren’t coming here to be a positive vet influence on a team full of youngsters that are still learning the NBA).

Jrue is more of a combo guard than point and prefers to play off the ball
