re: Berhalter Is A Clown

Do you seriously not remember the outcry for fewer presidential powers, including being the sole guy in charge of hiring firing the coach?
You're changing history to support your pathetic argument, my guy. The vitriol was towards Sunil, not towards the idea of a federation president. And if there was anyone doing that, they need to tap out, because a federation NEEDS a president. A federation doesn't need a GM.

Part of that has to do with essentially using a U23 team for a calendar year. Hard to get too upset about a team of 21 year olds losing.
But there was no sense of direction because everyone knew Sarachen was not in charge for the long haul. Just go back to those Pulisic quotes. Yeah, I get it, there was nothing to play for on the pitch in 2018, but it would've been nice to have a permanent head coach in place, just so he could get use to his surroundings, put his culture in place, get a head start on the experimentation so that we could really hit the ground running in 2019 and beyond.
You really need to just stick to copy/pasting tweets from USMNT reporters in the tracker thread, because your shameless shilling for every decision that the USSF does is just asinine on so many levels.

I'm doing no such thing. Saying "everyone" might be extreme, but there was a large, vocal group that did not want a non-soccer guy to make the decision on a new coach. Would you rather have the former Goldman Sachs partner or the MAC Breda technical director/AZ director of football affairs/Philly Union Sporting Director leading the coaching search?
The only problem with the GM position is they gave it too few responsibilities. That's also partly why it took so long to hire someone. They had to rewrite it a few times because the candidates thought it was too restricting.

I would've rathered that we elected someone that doesn't have Sunil's hand up his arse as federation president.
Again, there is no excuse whatsoever that when Bruce resigned in October of 2017 and we didn't have a permanent replacement in place until December of 2018. The narrative we were fed for the delay was that we were waiting to interview a coach that was in the World Cup, turns out not only did we not do that, but we didn't even interview Tata Martino. Berhalter may work out, who knows at this point, but there is still no defense for how long it took to hire him.

i know jurgy didn't exactly work out, but any hire from the MLS/US does not instill any confidence in the program

Agreed, he is a clown. However, I will not call for him to be let go until after he botches this GC.

I agree, but who was supposed to hire him? Sunil, who was on his way out?

How hard is it to find a manager that runs basic formations and play players in spots they're accustomed to playing? Berhalter is clearly a "square peg in a round hole" kind of guy.
We need someone who sticks to the basics, fit a system around the best players available, play young folks (based in Europe primarily), with a strong emphasis on set pieces.

Cordeiro was elected in February, Earnie was hired in early June.
In that time, we should've been hiring a coach, not make a hire to make a hire for another position.
The GM thing is the biggest farce ever, no one (and by that I mean even people that cover the USMNT) still really knows what Earnie's job actually entails. They just know it has something to do with the USMNT.
Cordeiro fricking ran for USSF prez on the grounds of having more transparency in the federation and the first major move he makes is hiring someone with the foggiest job description ever.

How good is Bob Bradley looking, in hindsight?

Yep, it’s these types of moves that scream complete mismanagement.
I think the bigger problem is that USSF position is an elected position.
What has been killing US Soccer is the parasitic relationship with SUM and MLS. Cordeiro is basically a puppet for those two organizations and let’s their influence (read money) dictate USSF policy.
I get that USSF needs MLS backing but the USSF needs to be its own entity free from undue influence to make decisions that make US Soccer better not enriching a few who profit from be aligned with SUM.
I cannot tell you how much I hate the single entity system but it’s up there with pay for play. The US will not be legitimate contender until things are fixed at the grass roots level.
P.s. frick the MLS calendar as well.

I know this sounds silly, but you should try emailing him and see if you get a response. I emailed Sunil a few years back and got a response pretty quickly.

The entire US system is screwed up. It goes all the way to club soccer. Pay Thousands to play. We aren't getting the best talent. The US system has become a huge money grab instead of developing players.

It’s a shame it developed this way but it’s slowly changing.

Besides the fact that you would be having to go head up against the NFL and college football. MLS in the summer makes perfect sense in terms of marketing and maximizing attendance and viewership.

For a minute there I thought those two were still going at it.
