Paul Brown was their first coach. I don't believe he was the majority owner though.

Yeah, the unique names or regional names are fine. The bland names like Titans or Texans blow.

not owner but coach/GM... Paul Brown
and if you pay attention... the Cincinnati Bengals play in Paul Brown Stadium
Franchise Nicknames - Pro Football Hall of Fame website
quote:
CLEVELAND BROWNS – The Cleveland All-America Football Conference franchise conducted a fan contest in 1945 to name the team. The most popular submission was “Browns” in recognition of the team’s first coach and general manager Paul Brown, who was already a popular figure in Ohio sports. Brown at first vetoed the choice and the team selected from the contest entries the name “Panthers.” However, after an area businessman informed the team that he owned the rights to the name Cleveland Panthers, from an earlier failed football team, Brown rescinded his objection and agreed to the use of his name.

Seems like a good thread to propose
My 3 team name change Toronto, New Orleans and Utah
New Orleans gets the Jazz back for obvious reasons
Utah gets the Raptors: Utah is actually full of fossils
Toronto: gets to bane their team after something Canadian like canadiens love to do. Something along the lines of The Maple Leafs, Northstars, Canadians, Canucks

Dumbass move not to name them the Senators again.
I understand the mayor was against it and the caved to him.
Nationals is lame.
But I would have gone with the Grays. There's history and tradition behind that name.

I will get downvoted by the fans on here but Colt .45s to Astros is right there on "Awesome to Mickey Mouse" rebrands.
Its slightly better just because its at least connected to the city and not just an alliteration.

Call them the loons.
Their dollar coin is a loonie because the bird is on it. It fits!

Babycakes, and it's not even close. Why in the frick did they have to change it from the perfectly serviceable "Zephyrs"?
Packers are a distant second, but at least they have a winning tradition and their name has a bit of juvenile humor built in.
ETA: Best team name in all of sports has got to be the Delta State Fightin' Okra.

quote:You are correct. The names are stupid. Why do they have to mimic European names and European habits like singing chanting the entire game? Totally phony, unoriginal, imitation league.
MLS names that have United, Sporting, Club, City and so on with the names copied from Europe.

What about the St Louis Browns (present Baltimore Orioles)?

A great old traditional nickname, with great uniform colors since moving to Oakland.
