re: Mainieri says that Watson was right to get hosed by the cutoff play. I disagree

This. Base runners are taught to read the trajectory of the ball out of the outfielder’s hand. If you continue because of low trajectory, you’re trying to force a cut to prevent losing the run at the plate on a close play. In this case, the run was going score easily. There was no reason to just continue. Round second, see the cut, and get back. Play first and second and hope for a big inning.

Glad to have someone that understands base running join the thread

I would guess that downvoters have never played baseball above little/pony league, or were never coached on base running fundamentals.

You only disagree because it didnt work. No one would be saying anything if it had worked like expected or if Cabrera actually made it to 2nd like he should have.
It's not the easiest read as a baserunner. But, the key is that there is a play at the plate. There wasn't, because it was cut off.
If the cutoff man lets it go, Watson would have been right to have gone to 3rd...even if he's thrown out by the catcher.
If he knew it was going to be cut off, he's wrong for going to 3rd.
He misread the throw. It was a mistake.

Anyone arguing that this was the right play is a fool.
You don’t run into a sure out early in the game with less than two outs when the runner heading home was going to score if he backpedaled home. THAT WAS BAD SITUATIONAL AWARENESS and an example of Mainieri’s reckless base running philosophy.

Caberra should have been on 2nd which is the biggest gripe. If you're going to get in a rundown, the man in 1st needs to advance to where Watson was.

It’s a gripe, but not the biggest to me. Yes, Watson stayed in the rundown plenty long enough for Cabrera to move up. He shouldn’t have been in a rundown, though.

It still gave them an out.
I would rather two on with less outs than one on with more outs.
I still completely disagree with that decision
Even if Cabrera has gotten to 2nd it was stupid to help them out with another out. Period.

Yes read the trajectory of the ball but the opposite of what you said. If the trajectory is high you go because the throw is likely going all the way to the plate not to the cutoff man and you have 3rd easy. If the trajectory is low then the ball is probably gonna be cutoff, runner at home is likely going to score anyway and sense they cut the ball off you're hosed at 3rd.

I explained it as a given that high trajectory is an auto move up. Sorry if that wasn’t clear. I was explaining in regard to yesterday’s play.

But I agree you can’t expect to go 1st to 3rd on a shallow hit in CF where there was very little chance for play at the plate. Gotta be smarter than that.
Exactly and if anyone would watch he was just leisurely trotting to 2nd base wondering if he should continue to third. I couldn’t believe he kept going. Very poor base running.

Don’t care what Paul said, facts are facts. I’m glad he didn’t hang Watson out to dry publicly though. Nothing productive in that.

Nope. Good baserunners wait to make sure it won’t be cut off. Judge by the height of the throw then go. You don’t just go regardless. Little Leaguers do better than that.

That's on Watson, not CPM. He has to read that throw high out of his hand. He was being aggressive and he got caught. Garza missing 2nd base was really bad, but again not CPMs fault. The bases are there for a reason

You should never make the 1st or 3rd out at 3rd base. That is a general baseball rule. So yes, it was a mistake.
It wasn’t a frickup mistake, it was a hustle mistake. The latter doesn’t lose you games.
ETA: That type of baserunning mistake is the same as an infielder making a diving stab and then trying to make a throw that would never result in an out. You just can’t be mad about “hustle mistakes” IMO.
ETAA: If he’d gotten to third safely it’s the equivalent of stealing the base. The only reason it ducks is it was the 1st out of the inning.

Watson doesn’t know how to run bases.
Period
Period

Maybe if he would have been told that what he did Saturday was dumb, he would have learned not to make another dumb baserunning mistake on Sunday.
