Mainieri says that Watson was right to get hosed by the cutoff play. I disagree

Takes yourself out of a big inning. And the runner would have been safe at home anyway.

You only disagree because it didnt work. No one would be saying anything if it had worked like expected or if Cabrera actually made it to 2nd like he should have.

Team Sweep right there

Fundamental rule of baseball is not to make first or third out of the inning at third base....eta this is incorrect. This ended up being the second out of the inning

Clearly killed the momentum of the inning

At least he didn’t throw a player under the bus for once.

But I agree you can’t expect to go 1st to 3rd on a shallow hit in CF where there was very little chance for play at the plate. Gotta be smarter than that.

Runner not getting to second was unacceptable.

They should have been up 6 or 7 to zip if they stick to fundamentals in base running and getting runs home from 3rd with less than 2 outs. This plus all the walks have been the biggest failures on the field this year. It has cost them a number of games this year over and above the injury and roster issues.

In regards to the 2 outs made on the base paths yesterday this was by far the less egregious one and was debatably the correct play by Watson. The mistake by Garza was a way bigger momentum killer in my opinion.

Wasn’t the ball cut off pretty close to home?

Cabrera should have been at 2nd when Watson got hung up.

Wrong. That play had zero chance of working. He was midway between the bases. That’s a gimme out.

Other teams never do that crap on purpose (for all the coach knows best simpletons).

Maybe you could make that argument if going for one run in the 9th.

Except that play works all the time in baseball. The throw to home got cutoff in the middle of the infield and Florida State made a good play. Runners advance all the time in that situation especially with someone who has the speed of Watson.

The only issue people should have with it is that Cabrera should have gotten to 2nd. (Which PM coaches them to do btw)

Nope. Good baserunners wait to make sure it won’t be cut off. Judge by the height of the throw then go. You don’t just go regardless. Little Leaguers do better than that.

If you can’t tell (fielder has a chance to cut it), you stay at 2nd. Still in good shape to score from 2nd in the inning.

If the outfield throw had gone to the plate and not been cutoff and Watson was still standing on 2nd base, you would have started a thread bitching about "why didn't Watson take third base on that play?"

Cabrera needs to get to second there.

That's about as dumb a statement he could have made. Why is he trying to protect this player in this situation, when he all too often throws his players under the bus?

Didn't make sense in that moment considering the lead, the early move to the bullpen, and the current momentum.

You're up 4-0 in the bottom of the fifth with runners at first and second with one out and Garza at the plate

You also have to consider that the ball was hit to shallow center to OF with their best arm...yeah....the RP that hit in the 90s

All around bad decision

You have to freaking read it. It isn’t that difficult.

And hell no I wouldn’t be bitching. Being at 2nd in that spot is nothing to complain about.

Maybe someone who knows nothing about baseball would have complained
