The Dream: A Podcast About MLMs
Posted on 6/6/19 at 10:17 am

Has anyone listened to this podcast?
There are 11 episodes. The last episode was published on December 3rd, 2018.
Right now I am on episode 9 and the last few episodes have really gotten into some good research. It talks about a case in the early 70s that brought down a big MLM and a few small ones, but because of the way the FTC and others who were working on this went about it (they thought if they could take down the smaller ones first then the bigger one, that would allow them to go after Amway, but Amway was well connected politically).
One of the girls on the podcast joined one for research purposes and pursue it as if she was really planning on doing it. She joined a MLM that sold makeup. As she kept track of everything. Communications with the person she signed up with, etc, etc. She pretty much was able to prove that it is impossible for 99% of the people who join, to make money.
She had gone to a "corporate conference" where people from all over came in. And there was a part where people shared their stories and one woman got up and was telling everyone how she was on the verge of committing suicide a month before joining the company. The girl doing the research said she was watching the "corporate" people because it was an emotional moment, and it was as if they didn't care at all.
And that she realized, after people told their story, most people who joined were broken in some way. Women trying to earn extra money to go to marriage counseling, etc. It's really sad how most of these companies prey on poor and vulnerable people.

The thing that fascinates me is how overnight fairly reasonable women turn into these MLM social media robots spewing the same shite.
It's like they all take a week long course on how to make posts about your husband or date night or your kids. And I don't mean just the attention whoring, they talk about the same subjects, in the same manner, down to the same emoticons/pictures and whatnot. It's crazy.

That is how they are coached. They're doing nothing more than reading from a script.

I’m not a big social media guy other than TD. But many women do that on FB and instagram to show their families and close friends. My wife may only post something once a week a picture of us together or kids but it’s not to show off to some old random high school guy friend who doesn’t give any fricks, or an old coworker. It’s for her family and close friends that truly do want to see them.
Some women do attention whore but the pics of families and friends or whatever is just one of the things that social media is about in the first place.
ETA: As far as MLM, I don’t know. I guess they just follow the examples of other women

Sure, not really what I'm talking about.
I mean, make no mistake, plenty of MLM women were very much attention whores on social media before the MLM. But some weren't, and even those that are make posts in a completely different style (by a script, as someone else seemed to note).
The thing I think is interesting is that while they're very scripted, they make posts constantly and they're varied, so I'm guessing they give them "themes" to use or the like rather than just truly scripted posts, but who knows.

they are designed to work the FB and Instagram algorithms so the posts get boosted or shown more, or whatever. the subject of these kinds of posts are designed to get engagement from friends and followers

Yes. This is an excellent podcast. I am waiting for season 2 to drop.

Agreed. One of the strangest and most fascinating works of art in history.

Apparently, in general hunbots are all told to post 6-9 times a day. A third of their post must be about the mlm products. Others are to boost image.
They also need to visit other hunbots pages and "like' and comment on those pages as well. Plus they have to be on various social media. Plus give shoutouts and other stupid shite.
This article has a worksheet for a daily checklist of things they need to post. LINK
I hate their posts that have a million emoticons. They remind me of the old Highlights magazine for kids in drs waiting rooms. They have those dumb-downed stories for little kids that have pictures instead of words.
We have a hunbot in the family so i am exposed to this stuff. She is young and i feel bad for her.

They play numerous recordings of speeches from people preaching the ideas of taking responsibility for your own success and comment on them like they are crazy far right wing zealotd
Yes they do and I agree people should take responsibility of their own success (and failure), but they do it in a manner in which they are telling people that if they do not succeed in that company, no one else is to blame. Yet statistically, they telling this to a group in which statistically, 99% of the group will likely not have success in a company.
So they are telling people "hey, join our company. you can have success, but if you don't.. it's because you are a failure". It's feeding vulnerable people bullshite.

"yea, if you're a white male."
I do recall that comment, but if I do recall she was saying it in a "statistically speaking" type way.

There are numerous jabs at Trump throughout the show
They do mention Trump a few times. But the one I recall was a man who called in to give his story in dealing with a MLM. The company the person who was trying to recruit him was a company Trump endorsed.
That was stating a fact. He endorsed a MLM named ACN. He also sold his name to a MLM that wanted to use the Trump name.. Trump Network. If you are going to do an 11 episode show on MLMs, then because of his involvement in these and several other MLMs, he will be mentioned to some degree.

These companies teach them to be aggressive. Don't take no for an answer. The more people see it, they are more likely to inquire about it, etc.
On the podcast, this one lady told a story of a friend she hadn't talked to in 4 years. She up and sent her a message asking how she was doing and how were the kids doing in school. The girl replied and the other girl's reply to her was pretty much like "Good to hear. Hey, I am so close to earning a cruise. All I need to do is sell x amount of this product. Can I depend on you to buy _________________". She never replied back to her.
But that is what they spend their time doing.
One MLM would use their model to sell people. Sell the idea that all they had to do was get 5 people under them who are all able to get 5 people under them and those people all work to get 5 under them, they could be making $1M within a year.
While I guess it's possible, if someone starts out and is able to get their five people. Those five people will likely be going after many of the same people.. Because the pool of people who will actually buy into is is a lot smaller than the people you know. So they are running press all the time.
