He had two extended plate appearances on his walks that helped elevate the SPs pitch count when we otherwise weren't doing a lot to work him.

But there has to be a punching bag every year. Last year it was Slaughter, this year it's Hughes. Guys that aren't perfect players but still bring value in ways that aren't as readily apparent.

He must have made one hell of a run in the postseason, or just had limited ABs, b/c I distinctly remember the .190 avg come tournament baseball time.

Could the .255 have been a different year or combined?

I also remember Stevenson with a similar avg his FR year.

Hughes is going to be 2008 Derek Helenihi. Maybe get 1 hit the rest of the post season but make the diving stop in the 9th of the CWS finals.

I like Hughes. Seems like a great team player. And it isnt his fault there isnt someone the coaches feel is better

But its tough to feel good about our ultimate goal with someone as unproductive as him in the lineup

.255 in 2009 on 106 at bats

he hit .295 the year before on 241 at bats

.250 or so used to be what we considered the bottom of the barrel for an lsu lineup. Hughes is a huge outlier for lsu baseball and hitting

I don’t think some people understand how terrible a .170 AVG and sub .200 SLG are. It’s basically impossible to play good enough defense to make that up.

For reference in 1981 Ozzie Smith hit .222 with a .256 SLG. That year he had a 1.0 WAR. Fangraphs says 0-1 WAR = Scrub, 1-2 WAR = role player. So the greatest defensive player ever basically provided a value between a scrub and a role player with offensive stats BETTER than Hal Hughes.

I know comparing MLB stats to college stats isn’t apples to apples, but you pretty much can’t be good enough defensively to overcome hitting under .200 with no power. And Hal sure as shite isn’t Ozzie Smith with the glove.

I’m just as frustrated as a lot of people on here, but man these threads calling him out are getting very tiresome. I really hope he’s not on TD

I may or may not have done that a couple of times with my pitching machine teams..

Would have done it with T ball teams,, but we didn’t bunt a lot,,, on purpose!

LSU is 18-6 with him playing 3B.

I don't remember any plays he made that won us games. It's one thing to have a SS or 2nd basemen that is a terrible hitter but great defensively but on almost every team the 3rd basemen is a power hitter and rbi guy

Hughes's value to the lineup is negative. Not only is he an almost guaranteed out, but he affects the hitter in front of him. By not posing a threat, pitchers can just pitch around the hitter in front of Hughes. And it's not like Hughes is a star middle infielder--he's an OK 3rd baseman at this point.

Reid's fielding at 3rd is not as much of a liability as Hughes's abysmal offense.

Point being, you can’t simply quantify his defense in wins and losses. That’s not how this works.

I doubt he is, but honestly he knows his stats anyway

The truth is CPM just doesnt feel comfortable with any other defensive lineups

If you put in Gio, that means you DH him and Beloso goes to first and Reid to 3rd. CPM isnt going to want to do that

Go back to watching softball where you can just sun in and out the fat, slow, power hitters

Any breakdown as to how he hits lefties?

please note that i did not advocate pulling him from the lineup

the intention was to discuss the most efficient ways to utilize him

That is an OPS of .725 vs .478

Thats ridiculously huge. The only way you could say his defense was needed at a non middle infield position with that gap in hitting would be if the choice was between Hughes and someone with one leg
