After being fully invested several years I got out this morning

I went to all cash this morning. I'm usually optimistic about the market but I think the wheels may be coming off for the foreseeable future and i don't want to take the ride down any lower. I think China will only get worse and I think they will wait til the presidential election to see if Trump gets ousted. More China tariffs to come. And now a totally left field thing with Mexico tariffs. I like that Trump is trying to fix problems that should have been dealt with decades ago, however, its not good for my portfolio. He's just too unpredictable for the stock market. I'm just gonna wait things out for a while. Maybe go into a long term government bond ETF.

Good for you? If you don't like the volatility then that's your prerogative to get out of the market.
A market that swings based of a tweet or a temporary sanction doesn't make sense to me.
The market down 1.3% today based on the Mexico tariff threat...the market is worth $~34T and so this implies ~$400B in value was lost because of the Mexico tariff?

Congrats on the tax bill!
Are you over 65? If not, 100% cash is probably ill advised. Probably even if you are over 65.

In the land of biomed penny stocks there is always a buying opportunity!!

Appears that market reactions to Trump tweets are quickly corrected and don’t last long.

I'm not smart enough to time the market.
You may be making a smart play, but who knows?
When will you get back in?

Hypothetical investing scenario
I like this one. Cliff notes: Even if you invest only right before crashes you will come out ahead as long as you stay the course.

Hell there could be some nice dips, but still hold off because "it's not done yet." and get caught in no man's land.
Should have been taking gains along the way to rwbalance your portfolio so you DCA when there's dip to buy.

I was about to get out at the recent high in the beginning of May. I did very well and thought maybe its a good time to take a good profit. We all thought the China deal was just a few days away and I thought another big bump was coming. Then the wheels came off and I'm off about 6% this month. I'm not independently wealthy but its just me and even getting out now I'm pretty well off financially. Not sure when I'll get back in. If that long term bond fund does well I may just settle for the lower gains for a while. I just feel the bottom may be a ways more to go, doesn't look like anything will be resolved any time soon.

What's your age? If you're 75 this isn't a crazy thing to do. However if you're 35....

All that you say may turn out to be true, but this is a bad idea. As an old timer that has seen a lot of these ups and downs, I have realized that you can't time the market. You need to be in the market for the long term. You shouldn't have any money in the market that you might need in the next five years. Settle on an asset allocation (stocks, fixed income and cash) that works for you, and stick with it, rebalancing as needed as the market goes up and down.

Yes he’s doing things that need to be done. It will hurt in the short term but I’m optimistic that America can win a trade war. I’m pretty young so my hope is that my portfolio will come out ahead in 25 years when we are the mfg powerhouse again. Don’t blame you though

So you rode out last December, which was way worse, but this is what made you go full cash? :|
