I'm assuming it goes back to the tradition of a dowry along with religious/cultural traditions for the celebration.
It's been morphed into an ugly business though where girls get to swipe a credit card on anything and everything they want. $8000 for a dress...one dress...worn one time.
$350 for a ceremony musician who looks at the song list the morning of the wedding.
It's baffled me since I started playing weddings 6 years ago.

Considering the woman is who gives a shite about any of that, her parents can pay because I sure as frick won't.
If it were up to me, the wedding would consist of sitting infront of a judge and taking the family out to a $$-$$$ restaurant after, and spending the remainder on a boat.
How does that sound to most women?

The reception isn't the groom's responsibility.
But the Rehearsal dinner, flowers, and invitations are the groom's responsibility(or his parents). He obviously doesn't have a say in selecting any of it, just pay for it.
