Its difficult to get someone out to do small stuff, Im dealing with the same thing right now.
Yep. I needed a few feet added to a very short driveway at our first house. I don't remember the amount of concrete but it was maybe a 1000-1500 job.
I had a hard time finding someone that would do it. Most companies would just way overprice it. I finally found some old black dude named Willy that did the work for me. He was probably in his 60s and wore cowboy boots and a hat.

Maybe they’re uncomfortable doing work in a trailer park

Watching 'This Old House' you would think that highly skilled, professional, well spoken, and honest craftsman are just a quick phone call away. They aren't. There's a huge skills gap in this country. A good tradesman will never have to worry about being unemployed.

They like my money and quick.

I went through the same thing for some handyman work and finally found a pretty reliable dude. Well, 2. But one of them tried to rob me blind, like I thought it would cost $1k to replace some rotting casing around a door.
But Kevin, my new guy, is the shite. I'm in Tennessee, though.

you need to find older retired men that are capable still

Have had similar experiences here. Had a water heater installed but needed someone to come reseal the exhaust pipe on the roof since the new water heater is slightly taller. HE was supposed to come on Saturday. Finally made it on Tuesday evening. For some things I just have to go with one of the big service provider companies. It costs a little bit of premium but they show up and the work is normally warrantied.

Is the home improvement baw job market so good that they say frick it i dont want this guys money?
It's a combination of a lot of work, not a lot of people who want to work, and people wanting to pay as cheaply as possible.
For a full time construction guy, it's not worth it to take some people off of a huge job / long term contract, simply to do your small job.
Plumbing, I know this is a big issue. The number of guys who will actually come out to your house and fix a plumbing issue keeps getting smaller and smaller. You either have the roto-rooter types which are ripoffs, or you have a lot of guys who only do construction work.

One thing that would turn me off to work like that is if I saw a larger problem with bad wood, where if I started pulling that thread it would all come unwound and you'd blame me for it. No thanks.

Be careful what you ask for. Contractors are raping people out there on bids. It amazes me they use illegal subs and still charge out the arse. It's amazing.

But the Roto-Rooter and John Moore types actually show up. So if you don't have "a guy" you may be stuck with these companies to get it done and done on time.

I’ve been dealing with this since I bought my first home. Finally found someone to do that kind of stuff for me last year

I see this all the time, especially at our place in the Keys. Keys Disease they call it.
Hell, I can’t get anyone to extend a slab for patio at our place in Colorado.
Either they are too busy or job too small.

I had a handyman/electrician out about 2 months ago. His phone blew up the whole time. Said he had more work than he could handle. He said the Nextdoor app was the best/worst thing ever.

I am having this same exact problem

Why do people not want my money?
It is funny you mention this....my mom is approaching 70 and has moved to a new house about 6 years ago after my dad passed. She has had nothing but bad luck/trouble with anyone who she hired to do work on her house, be it freelance or actual businesses.
She had issues with a painter who never showed up when he was supposed to and finished the job way later that he should have. The guy who put her floor down was the same way.
She bought a new air conditioner from a well-known local company who installs AC's and prides themselves on quality service. Well a few weeks ago they were supposed to come by and do a regular maintenance check and the guy who was supposed to show up had gone home and taken a nap and got there 2 hours late.
And there have been several others....it just seems like every single time that she does some sort of home improvement, the people she ends up getting are half-assed about when they are supposed to show up. And she does her due diligence before hiring people....she has just repeatedly had shitty luck. Am glad she isn't the only one...

Look for contractors on a site like Modernize or Amazon Home Improvement Services

My neighbor just got an estimate for close to $5 grand and they told him it's just not worth it. They said they'd eventually do it, but it would be their lowest priority and months if not year+.
